Sustainable development GOALS

To end poverty in all its forms everywhere by 2030.

GOAL 1

In 2015, over 700 million people lived in extreme poverty, struggling with basic needs like health, education, and sanitation.

Governments, the private sector, and science must work together to promote inclusive growth, job creation, and solutions to reduce poverty.

Contributing factors include unemployment, social exclusion, and vulnerability to disasters. Strong social protection systems are crucial, but in 2016, 55% of people lacked that coverage.

How do natural disasters, like the DANA in Valencia, affect poverty and social inequality in Spain?

To end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture .

GOAL 2

Extreme hunger and malnutrition also trap people in poverty. In 2019, 690 million were undernourished, 2 billion didn't have access to safe food, and 144 million children were stunted.

Solutions include supporting local agriculture and providing social protection to ensure access to nutritious food. Individuals can help by supporting local farmers, making sustainable food choices, reducing waste, and advocating for policies that promote Zero Hunger and food security globally.

Why do you think hunger and malnutrition persist in a world with enough resources to feed everyone?

To ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

GOAL 3

Ensuring healthy lives is key to building prosperous societies, but the COVID-19 pandemic has put global health systems to their limits, particularly in poorer countries with limited resources.

Progress, such as reduced child and maternal mortality and immunization, has slowed. By 2030, 18 million additional health workers will be needed. Currently, only 40% of people in the world have essential health service access. Individuals can help by promoting healthy lifestyles, vaccinating children, raising awareness, and holding governments accountable to improve healthcare access, especially for vulnerable groups.

How do public healthcare systems give access to medical services, and what are the advantages it has to ensure equitable healthcare for all?

Ensure inclusive and equality education for all andpromote lifelong learning.

GOAL 4

Education is key to socioeconomic mobility and reducing poverty. It promotes equality, tolerance, and peaceful societies. In 2018, 258 million children and youth were out of school, and COVID-19 disrupted education for 1.6 billion students.

There are still many challenges, like the digital inequity, or the right to education for women and girls, as gender inequality and illiteracy remain significant issues. To address this, governments must prioritize education policies, provide free schooling for all, and reduce inequalities to ensure better opportunities for marginalized communities.

Why is education considered a fundamental tool for personal development, reducing inequalities, and building more tolerant and prosperous societies?

To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

GOAL 5

Gender inequality persists worldwide. Women and girls face disadvantages from birth, like unequal access to education, healthcare, and job opportunities, leading to higher mortality rates and limited career prospects.

As a society, we need to make a commitment: empowering girls through education, combating harmful cultural practices, promoting women's leadership, and ensuring equal rights. Achieving gender equality is critical for fostering healthier, more prosperous societies.

While problems like child marriage and female genital mutilation, there is still much to do. COVID-19 has exacerbated issues like domestic violence.

Have you ever seen or experienced any form of gender-based violence, and how do you think schools and communities can help create a safer environment for women?

To ensure access to safe water sources and sanitation for all.

GOAL 6

Access to clean water and hygiene is a human right, yet 2.2 billion people lack drinking water. Issues like water scarcity, pollution, and lack of infrastructure impact health, poverty, and ecosystems.

Climate change makes water scarcity even worse, threatening biodiversity and sustainable development. In 2017, 3 billion people couldn't wash their hands at home, and many healthcare facilities lacked basic water services. Sustainable water management can improve health, food security, and climate resilience.

What are the main uses of water in daily life and why is it important to manage water resources responsibly to meet these needs?

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

GOAL 7

Energy systems are vital for economy, healthcare, education, and business. Still, 789 million people, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, still lack it. Additionally, 2.8 billion people rely on unsafe cooking fuels, which harm health and the environment.

Fossil fuel use contributes to climate change, therefore, there is a need for renewable energy. Solutions include investing in renewable energy, adopting efficient practices, and encouraging sustainable choices at all levels.

How does electricity impact your daily life, and how would your routine change if you had to live without it for a week?

To promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all.

GOAL 8

Sustained and inclusive economic growth is essential for reducing poverty, creating jobs, and improving living standards.

Governments and organizations must focus on building sustainable economies, with particular emphasis on youth employment, women’s empowerment, and safe working environments.

Decent work involves fair wages, job security, and social protections. Addressing these challenges requires investing in quality education and training, ensuring social protections for students, and promoting equality.

What does having a "decent job" mean to you? How would your future be affected if you couldn't find one?

To build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

GOAL 9

Economic growth, social progress, and climate action rely on infrastructure, industrialization, and innovation. However, challenges like lack of manufacturing, insufficient infrastructure, and limited internet access, hinder progress.

Inclusive and sustainable industrialization is vital for reducing poverty, creating jobs, and improving living standards. Failing to act could lead to poor healthcare, sanitation, and education.

How would your daily life change without infrastructure like roads, internet, or electricity, and why is it important to invest in these for everyone, especially in developing countries?

To reduce inequalities within and among countries.

GOAL 10

Inequalities based on factors like salary, gender, disability, and race persist globally, making development harder and raising discrimination. Vulnerable groups, such as women, children, migrants, and those with disabilities, face limited access to healthcare, opportunities, and protection.

Achieving equality requires eradicating poverty, investing in health, education, and jobs, and eliminating discriminatory laws. Inclusive policies are essential for marginalized communities, and global collaboration is needed to address migration and inequality.

Can you imagine what challenges someone might face because of inequalities like being a woman, a person with a disability, or a migrant? How would those struggles affect their daily lives and opportunities for the future?

To make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

GOAL 11

Urban areas face challenges like pollution, inequality, and inadequate infrastructure. Cities account for 75% of carbon emissions and are vulnerable to climate change and disasters.

Citizens can contribute by engaging in city planning, advocating for safe, sustainable communities, and improving local neighborhoods to improve urban resilience and quality of life for all.

Poorly planned urbanization leads to issues like slums, traffic congestion, and environmental harm. Sustainable practices, such as public transport systems, improve quality of life and economic productivity.

How do elements like green spaces, waste bins, and traffic management impact the quality of life in your city?

To ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

GOAL 12

Economic and social progress has led to significant environmental degradation, threatening our future. Challenges include growing electronic waste, food waste and water pollution.

Businesses can innovate and redesign products to reduce environmental impact, while consumers can reduce waste, avoid single-use plastics, and make informed purchases. Collective efforts in reducing consumption and promoting sustainable practices can save the environment for future generations.

What small actions do you already do at home, like separating waste, turning off lights, or reusing items, to help the environment, and what new habits could you start to make an even bigger difference?

Taking urgent action to tackle climate change and its impacts.

GOAL 13

Climate change is causing extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and disrupted economies, affecting millions. Without action, global temperatures could rise beyond 3°C, threatening ecosystems, food and water security, and increasing conflicts. While renewable energy investments are growing, fossil fuel investments remain higher.

Global efforts, like the Paris Agreement, aim to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C, but significant transformation in energy, agriculture, and transport is needed.

How do you think climate change impacts everyday life for people around the world, and what actions can individuals and communities take to reduce its effects?

To conserve and sustainably use the world's ocean, seas and marine resources.

GOAL 14

Oceans are vital for regulating the global climate, supporting biodiversity, and providing livelihoods for over 3 billion people. They absorb 23% of CO₂ emissions and 90% of excess heat, mitigating climate change impacts.

Oceans are also crucial for health, offering resources for pharmaceuticals and protein for millions. Solutions include reducing plastic use, supporting sustainable fisheries, participating in clean-ups, and raising awareness about ocean conservation.

However, irresponsible exploitation has caused significant degradation, including plastic pollution (5-12 million tonnes annually), marine heatwaves, and coral reef loss.

What are some resources the ocean provides us , and how can we ensure these are used sustainably for future generations?

GOAL 15

To sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reseverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.

Forests cover 31% of Earth’s land, providing oxygen, clean water, food, and habitat for 80% of terrestrial species. However, biodiversity is declining rapidly due to deforestation, land degradation, and climate change, affecting 3.2 billion people globally.

Forest loss leads to increased carbon emissions, species extinction, and fragile ecosystems. Actions to combat these issues include recycling, sustainable consumption, ethical ecotourism, and involving local communities in managing protected areas to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem health.

What would happen to our planet and our lives if all the forests disappeared, and what can we do to prevent this from becoming a reality?

GOAL 16

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all and build effective, inclusive institutions at all levels.

Peaceful societies free from violence, conflict, and discrimination are essential for sustainable development. However, global challenges like armed conflicts, weak institutions, corruption, and human rights violations persist. Over 79.5 million people have fled war, and many children lack birth registration, limiting their rights.

Daily, civilians are killed in conflicts despite legal protections. Failure to act results in long-term suffering, economic decline, and weakened communities. Advocacy for accountability, respect for diversity, and equitable systems is critical for creating societies where everyone feels safe.

What would you do to protect yourself and your loved ones if your country were at war, and how could you contribute to helping others during such a difficult time?

To revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

GOAL 17

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to address universal challenges, requiring action from all countries.

Individuals can contribute by advocating for SDGs in their communities, supporting government-business collaborations, and participating in SDG initiatives.

To advance, resources like technology and funding must be mobilized among communities, and partnerships across governments, businesses, and civil society are essential.

Why are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) important for creating a better future, and which SDGs do you feel you could contribute to the most in your daily life?
