ALPR
Cultural Awareness
- Data is useful for any type of investigation involving a vehicle
- Plates can be flagged and system used as a type of warrantless fencing
Emulatate and adapt the Sault Ste. Marie model of having ALPR at all main arteries used to enter/exit the City.Benefits include:
Stationary ALPR
Geographic Advantage
Realistic scenarios: Immersive environments mirror real situations. Safety: Reduces the likelihood of accidents or injuries while training and on the job. Cost-effective and allows for significant increases of LFHR scenariosImproved decision-making skillsEnhanced teamwork: Fosters teamwork and coordination among officers. Increased confidence: VR training can increase officers' confidence when applying the skills they learn.
Why VR?
Data collection: VR training platforms can collect data on each trainee's performance, which can help agencies identify areas for improvement.
SPS 2023-2025 Business Plan
- Educating officers
- Developing relationships
- Prioritizing patience and understanding
Demographics: Persons of East Indian background and persons of Indigenous descent comprise significant populations in the Sarnia area. There is proportionally far less representation of these peoples at SPS.Strategy:
Bridging the Gap
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" Nelson Mandela
It is not realistic we will attain proportionate representation of these demographics we serve - thus making it further imperative we provide our officers with opportunities to learn and build relationships
Implement - One officer per week, ride-along with Aamjiwnaang Community Officer - Parade presentations from in-house members Develop - Partnership with local cultural groups for education/training - Immersive experiences for Officers (not Hawaii)
Be BCR ready Pic Mobert
The Plan
- Envisioning RIDE initiates as a Service-wide duty
- Data led targeting of areas, times of day for RIDE programs
- Engaging officers who are committed to the vision through a new sign-up process
To target impaired drivers
Re-calibrate
Public Accountability - Does our current program meet the test? - How would a ride-along feel? - Supporting data?
NicheRMS and Analytics show ZERO charges during SPS RIDE in 2024
-Remove the position for the last-standing Youth Engagement and Diversion officer. Solution/Alternative:- Establish School Liaison officers - each officer is assigned a school for which they are responsible
Youth Movement
CONS
- Further learning curve/resistance from local schools (change management)
- Increased follow-up and work for Patrol Officers (*also a PRO*)
PROS
- All officers learn and become capable of dealing with Diversion, Youth investigations
- Patrol Officers learn to develop relationships with a community partner
- Extra officer to deploy elsewhere in the Service, program can be managed by existing supervisor (IE Impact SSgt)
