- "I held your hand. Obviously I didn't hate you." (p. 171) Said by Ingrid, makes reference to an incident that happened years ago. In eighth grade, they accidentally held hands in class but didn't let go for a long time. That was their last contact with each other until this year, when they started talking againg as a result of Ingrid's accident, which made Van think that Ingrid hated him. This was a landmark moment within each of their personal stories, representing their realization that they both cares for each other deeply, even though they didn't stay in touch.
- "After all this time, I remembered my last dive." (p. 248) Said by Ingrid, who got ingured after a failed dive and the fact that she cannot remember how it happened torments her to the point that she suffers from insomnia. She finally remembers that the reason why she couldn't perform at her best was because her coach, who she always looks at before a dive, was trying to avoid another diver. He walked away, facing her back and not being able to look back at her, which made her distracted for her dive.
- "He told me to take care of you." (p. 274), said by Van after revealing the message he had kept all this time. They were talking about the day Ingrid's dad leaves, and how they remember that day. She recalls her dad saying something to Van before leaving. Ingrid asks Van what her dad said and Ingrid realizes that Van had been a good friend and she shut him out.
- "This was called getting my shit together and it felt fantastic." (p. 279) Said by Ingrid, after a long day of physical and mental work, to aknowledge the first day of going back to her routine, with the goal of putting herself back together after the accident. It represents her personality of not giving up and following her dreams no matter what.
- "Finally" (p. 322), whispered by Van to Ingrid repeating what his friends said, after Ingrid and Van end up together at the end of the book. They said that because they always thought they were meant to be together and Van repeated it to Ingrid because he agrees.
