similar forms of climate change

Venice, Italy, also faces challenges from sea-level rise and flooding, leading to widespread damage to its cultural heritage and infrastructure. The increasing frequency of "acqua alta" (high water) events highlights the urgent need for action to protect the city and its lagoon (Nicholls & Cazenave, 2010). Regionally, saltwater intrusion and flooding have affected tourism and local ecosystems, while globally, these issues exemplify the financial and environmental costs of inaction (Abidin et al., 2011).

Environmental Impact

Jakarta is sinking alarmingly due to sea-level rise from climate change and groundwater extraction (Abidin et al., 2011). Coastal flooding and tidal surges, intensified by climate change, have submerged neighborhoods. Poor urban planning has exacerbated this problem.

Government ResponseThe Indonesian government plans to relocate its capital from Jakarta to Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo, to reduce the strain on Jakarta and escape the flooding threat (Abidin et al., 2011).

Impact on Humans

Over 10 million residents face frequent flooding, which destroys homes and infrastructure. The flooding has worsened sanitation problems, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases (Abidin et al., 2011).

Global PartnershipsInternational organizations like the World Bank have funded infrastructure projects aimed at managing water resources and improving flood resilience.

Local Mitigation EffortsThe city has also embarked on constructing a “Giant Sea Wall” and restoring mangroves, leveraging natural barriers to combat rising sea levels and improve resilience against coastal flooding (Nicholls & Cazenave, 2010).

Impact on Animals

Rising sea levels and pollution have disrupted the biodiversity of mangroves, which are crucial habitats for local wildlife (Nicholls & Cazenave, 2010). The degradation of mangroves threatens marine species and reduces coastal protection.
