Climate Change In The Florida Keys
Effects of Climate change in the keys
Due to climate change and the warming of ocean waters, there has been an increase in ocean acidification, which is causing the coral reefs in Florida to chlorinate and turn white. The ocean has increased in acidity by 30% since the mid-1700s.
Rising Ocean Waters is an affect due to climate. This affects the mangroves in the Florida Keys providing a nest for sea turtles and fishes
Effects in the region and globaly
Similar Effects of the Florida Keys are occurring in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. These reefs have had Coral Bleaching and Ocean Acidification, causing the skeletal system of the corals to stop growing
The effects of both the Great Barrier Reef and the Florida Keys reef dying and being damaged is that it ruins biodiversity, and there will be a mass reduction of O2 coming from these reefs, affecting the Ozone layer and causing the earth to heat up more.
Whats being done
In a sanctuary in the Keys, scientists are trying to identify corals capable of withstanding diseases, high temperatures, and acidification. They long to restore reefs using these adapted species. They also partner with organizations to grow corals from nurseries and restore damaged reefs in the Keys.
