MAGAZINE
California Real Estate Magazine
- Protect consumers and elevate the real estate profession
- Set standard for ethical behavior and professional knowledge
In 1917, the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (C.A.R.), then known as the California Real Estate Association, launched a significant campaign to establish licensing requirements for real estate professionals. The push led to the creation of the California Real Estate Act of 1919, which officially established licensing requirements for real estate agents and brokers in California. This law made California one of the first states in the U.S. to regulate real estate practices through licensing.
DEPARTMENT OF REAL ESTATE
LINCENSES
- To promote ethical business practices .
- To organize local real estate boards across CA
- To create a unified voice to advocate for real estate property ownership.
The California Association of REALTORS® (C.A.R.) was founded in 1905 as the California State Realty Federation during a meeting in Los Angeles. The organization was created to unify and organize real estate professionals across the state of California, with the goal of elevating the standards of practice in the industry and advocating for policies that would protect property ownership and improve the business environment for real estate professionals.
California State Realty Federation
THE BEGINNING
- Consumer protection
- Consistency across all states and transactions
- Commitment to ethical practices
The adoption of NAR's Code of Ethics helped establish C.A.R. as a leader in promoting professionalism and ethics in California's real estate industry. The Code remains a cornerstone of REALTOR® membership and continues to evolve, ensuring it addresses contemporary issues in real estate practice.
DEPARTMENT OF REAL ESTATE
CODE OF ETHICS
- Stabilized property taxes for homeowners
- Helped homeowners stay in their homes during times of rising property values.
C.A.R. advocated for Proposition 13 to address the escalating property taxes that were threatening homeownership in California. In the 1970s, rising property values led to skyrocketing property taxes, causing financial strain on homeowners, especially those on fixed incomes, such as retirees.C.A.R. contributed financial resources and mobilized its members to support the initiative. C.A.R. was instrumental in advocating for the measure through lobbying and grassroots efforts, leveraging their statewide network of REALTORS®.
