William Shakespeare life and works

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and one of the most important dramatists in Western literature. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, Shakespeare's influence on language, literature, and the perfo rming arts is vast. His works include tragedies, comedies, histories, and poetry, many of which are still performed and studied today.

Early Life

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon to John Shakespeare, a successful glove-maker, and Mary Arden, the daughter of a wealthy landowner.

He was the third of eight children, and although there is little definitive information about his education, it is believed he attended the local grammar school, where he would have studied Latin and classical literature.

Shakespeare became a member of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, a playing company later known as the King's Men under the patronage of King James I. His career as a playwright blossomed during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

The First Folio and Enduring Influence

After his death, Shakespeare's friends and fellow actors compiled his works into what is known as the First Folio (1623), a collected edition of his plays.
