what effects does this have globally?
The drought is not only in Africa, it is also “spreading and becoming more common in the tropics and subtropics” (Trenberth, Kevin E.).
Where in the world is dealing with a similar form of climate change?
In Central England there was widespread flooding that followed with a severe drought in 2007. This drought was record breaking with severe heat waves due to climate change. (Trenberth, Kevin E.)
Climate Change Impacts
In Africa, temperatures have been increasing 0.05°C per decade. Due to the increase in temperature, there has been on "average a 25% decrease in rainfall over the past 30 years" (2009-Chapter 5). In the 1970's there was a drought and this caused "about 300,000 people and millions of animals to die” (2009-Chapter 5).
In addition, climate change also has increased illness, such as malaria, due to rise in temperatures. When the temperatures rise, it makes the enviornment more sutiable for disease spreading carriers like misquitos. This has caused "more than 110 million people in Africa " to become prone to malaria (2009-Chapter 5).
How does this affect the region around it?
Due to the drought in Sahel, it has caused “changes in atmospheric circulation, to changes in tropical SST patterns in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic basins” (Trenberth, Kevin E.).
What is currently being done to help the situation?
There is a U.S. agreement with Africa that helps with Drought control and helps people get food during drought crisis. They also help create "sustainable land, water management practices and help with the communities’ resilience to climate change" (U.S. Government).
