On 11 March 2011, an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 struck Japan, causing a devastating tsunami that claimed over 18,500 lives. The disaster severely damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant, causing a nuclear crisis with radiation release.

The tsunami waves, up to 8 metres high, swept through the Japanese coast, causing over 18,500 victims and enormous damage. They have spread to other parts of the Pacific, but the most severe impact has been in Japan.

The Fukushima accident was caused by the tsunami, which damaged nuclear reactors and caused the core to melt, releasing radiation and forcing the surrounding area to evacuate.
