The Raids
The Vikings raided to steal gold from monasteries and also to take people as slaves. The Vikings usually carried out their raids during the summer months when it was safer and easier to cross the sea . The rest of the year they would farm the land and raise animals for sustenance
But why did they raid?
The Vikings are well known for the attacks they made against their European neighbours, but these expeditions involved more than just plain violence:thanks to organisation and funding it became a business.
Viking Expeditions
Language also changed and evolved both during and after the Viking Era, culture, cuisine and art in Europe benefited from the expeditions.
Consequences
793-795
The Book of Kells survived a brutal Viking raid, where 68 monks were killed.
The increased traffic on the sea led to growth of the trading centres on land. A flow of trading products from foreign areas, such as the Islamic Empires, passed through the Viking markets. This contributed to economic development and a rise in population.
The book of Kells
The Book of Kells is a manuscript depicting the four Gospels of the Christian New Testament, written in Latin. It is the single most useful and referenced manuscript from its time period. More elaborately decorated than any other manuscript from its era, it’s often described as the “work of angels.”
