gastroenteritis
Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, often caused by viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections. In Navarro, Valle del Cauca, water pollution is a significant problem that has contributed to the increase in this disease. Geopolitics and climate change exacerbate the situation due to infrastructure deficiencies and lack of access to potable water. In Navarro, increased urbanization and industrial activities have led to greater contamination of local water sources. The lack of treatment plants and unsustainable agricultural practices have raised the levels of contaminants in rivers and aquifers, resulting in outbreaks of gastroenteritis, especially during intense rainy seasons when drainage is insufficient.
Introduction
General Objective: Evaluate the impact of water pollution on the health of the inhabitants of Navarro, Valle del Cauca, and its relation to gastroenteritis Specific Objectives: •Identify the main sources of water pollution. • Determine the prevalence of gastroenteritis in the affected population. • Propose measures to improve water quality and reduce cases of gastroenteritis.
General and Specific Objectives
Causes: • Industrial discharges: Local companies discharge untreated waste directly into water sources. • Use of pesticides: Agricultural practices that contaminate rivers and aquifers. • Domestic sewage: Lack of adequate treatment of domestic wastewater. • Lack of infrastructure: Deficiency in water treatment plants and outdated sanitation systems. Impacts: • Increase in gastroenteritis: Higher prevalence of gastroenteritis cases, especially among children and the elderly. • Dehydration: Severe cases of gastroenteritis lead to dehydration, which can be fatal if not treated properly. • Economic burden: Increase in healthcare costs and loss of productivity due to illness.
Water pollution in Navarro and its impact on human health. Water pollution in Navarro has caused an increase in cases of gastroenteritis, severely affecting public health. Industrial discharges, pesticides, and untreated domestic sewage are the main sources of contamination. The deficient sanitation infrastructure and the lack of treatment plants aggravate the problem.
Causes and Impacts on Human Health
Problem Situation

• Recent studies by the National Institute of Health (INS) indicate a 20% increase in cases of gastroenteritis in Navarro over the past five years. • Data from the Ministry of Health show a direct relationship between peaks in water contamination and outbreaks of gastroenteritis.
Epidemiological Data Prevalence and Mortality:
• Access to potable water. • Sanitation infrastructure. • Health education. • Regulation and environmental control policies.
Determinants of Environmental Health
Water pollution in Navarro is a critical issue that significantly contributes to the prevalence of gastroenteritis. Urgent measures are needed to improve water quality and reduce public health risks.
Conclusions
Learnings:
This activity has helped identify the interrelation between the environment and health, highlighting the importance of effective public policies and proper management of natural resources.
