Geopolitics and climate change exacerbate the situation due to infrastructure deficiencies and lack of access to potable water. In Navarro, increased urbanization and industrial activities have led to greater contamination of local water sources. The lack of treatment plants and unsustainable agricultural practices have raised the levels of contaminants in rivers and aquifers, resulting in outbreaks of gastroenteritis, especially during intense rainy seasons when drainage is insufficient.

General Objective: Evaluate the impact of water pollution on the health of the inhabitants of Navarro, Valle del Cauca, and its relation to gastroenteritis Specific Objectives: •Identify the main sources of water pollution. • Determine the prevalence of gastroenteritis in the affected population. • Propose measures to improve water quality and reduce cases of gastroenteritis.

General and Specific Objectives

Causes: • Industrial discharges: Local companies discharge untreated waste directly into water sources. • Use of pesticides: Agricultural practices that contaminate rivers and aquifers. • Domestic sewage: Lack of adequate treatment of domestic wastewater. • Lack of infrastructure: Deficiency in water treatment plants and outdated sanitation systems. Impacts: • Increase in gastroenteritis: Higher prevalence of gastroenteritis cases, especially among children and the elderly. • Dehydration: Severe cases of gastroenteritis lead to dehydration, which can be fatal if not treated properly. • Economic burden: Increase in healthcare costs and loss of productivity due to illness.
