It helps us choose the foods we eat and prevents us from eating spoiled and potentially poisonous products.

It is important for the perception of taste. Chewing food releases aromas that travel from the mouth and throat to the nose. Without the sense of smell, we would only be able to detect 5 basic tastes: sweet, salty, bitter, sour and umami (savory).
