In 1714, following the death of Queen Anne Stuart, the last monarch of the Stuart dynasty, the British crown passed to the House of Hanover, a German noble family. The British Parliament had passed the Act of Settlement (1701), which prohibited a Catholic from inheriting the throne. The closest Protestant relative was George I, great-grandson of James I of England.
