India's struggle for independence had lasted many years before it was finally achieved in 1947. The British had ruled India for almost 200 years, but by the 1940s, the demand for independence had grown stronger. Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders had led campaigns of non-violent resistance, including that the salt March and Quit India Movement. After World War II, Britain, weakened by the war, agreed to grant India freedom. On August 15, 1947, India became independent, but the country was divided into India and Pakistan, causing violence and migration. The partition led to widespread suffering, with millions of people displaced. The new governments faced many challenges, including rebuilding a divided society. Despite these difficulties, India's independence marked the end of British colonial rule.
