The freshly arrived Rhodes Scholars are given a warm welcome from Rhodes House and introduced to one another in person for the first time. At Orientation, Rhodes Scholars learn more about Oxford, the House itself, and the Rhodes Code of Conduct, and this transition is supported by Upper-Year Scholars.

Orientation

In-person opportunities to reflect and reunite as a whole cohort are significant to Scholars in their second year as many of them will return to different parts of the globe soon after. Second-year gatherings are opportunities to continue holding space for meaningful dialogue, shared values, and key reflections.

2nd Year Gatherings

Throughout Year One, Scholars embark on an immersive and profoundly reflective journey living internationally in Oxford among like-hearted Scholars worldwide. They have dined together, organized cultural and celebratory events alongside one another, and shared vital Oxford memories throughout their first year as Scholars.

Scholar programme

Year one

Rhodes Scholars are selected from groups of Rhodes Finalists in the fall of the year before arriving in Oxford from various constituencies worldwide.

Scholars Elect—Journey Begins

Upper Year Scholars continue to deepen bonds with one another through experiences like Meet and Mingles hosted at Rhodes House, cultural experiences, Rhodes Ball, and more. Rhodes Alumni host events in locations like London and New York, so Scholars are quickly welcomed into the next phase of continuing to build with the Rhodes community, even once they leave Oxford.

Upper Years Programming - Rhodes Alumni

Scholars set aside a weekend to be present with one another and to reflect on their learnings and growth over the past year as Scholars. Rhodes House facilitates this gathering to support Scholars in asking themselves: “Who really am I?”

1st Year Gathering

The second year for scholars is often about “going deeper” rather than wider. Scholars focus on deepening their communities of choice, extracurriculars, studies, and experiences they have grown to love in Oxford and at Rhodes House.

Scholar programme

Year two

Rhodes House hosts the Closing Gathering to support scholars in their reflections and celebrate their time in Oxford with one another. Poetry, fashion, and memory walls help Scholars close their time in Oxford and begin preparing for the next chapter of their lives. While they leave one another from Oxford, Scholars remain closely connected and often visit one another and share experiences long after their time in person during their studies.

Closing Gathering

Rhodes Trust supports Scholars in their inward journey as they reflect on their identity, values, and how they define and understand leadership. This programming is facilitated through in-person gatherings, readings and discussions, town halls, and more.

Mandatory/Trust-Held Programme

Rhodes Scholars experience broadening their worldview through immersive experiences both in and outside Rhodes House and Oxford. These include engaging with communities worldwide through scholar trips, organizing to build coalitions and social impact movements, volunteering alongside one another, and more.

Engaging with Communities

Scholars return from summer vacations - often traveling with one another - ready for their Year 2 to begin. Rhodes House hosts various welcoming events to build friendships memories, and share community before the academic year begins.

Welcome Back

Rhodes Scholars embarking on DPhils or longer academic degrees continue participating in Rhodes Programming and Events. Often, Upper-Year Scholars work as Scholar Program Facilitators (SPFs) and support incoming Scholars by welcoming them to Oxford and the community.

Scholar programme

Year three & above

Rhodes House and Rhodes Scholars prepare various opportunities (networking, sports events, pub visits, constituency dinners, and more!) to facilitate growing connections and friendships among the newly arrived Scholar cohort and the existing Scholar and Oxford at-large community.
