Origin of the Falls of the Eternal Flame
The Eternal Flame Waterfall is a unique natural feature located in Chestnut Ridge Park near Buffalo, New York. It is famous for a small waterfall in which a natural gas seep allows a flame to burn right at the base of the waterfall, creating the impression of an “eternal flame.”
Why is it mysterious and how was it discovered?
A few years ago, a group of geologists at Indiana University decided to investigate why this phenomenon was occurring and what impact it might have on the greenhouse effect. They discovered that the origin of the eternal flame waterfall is a hydrocarbon seepage from a subway reservoir.
