Jonathan Swift was born in ireland in 1667 and was educated at Trinity college of Dublin. In 1689 he went to England and served for 10 years as a secretary of William Temple. He became anglican priest and after Sir William death, he returned to ireland. In 1713 Swift formed a group of satirists with Alexander Pope, William Congreve and John Gay. In 1743 he was declared insane and died in 1745 in Dublin. He wrote different masterpieces, three of there are: A tale of a Tub, Gulliver's Travels and A Modest Proposal. The last work, A Modest Proposal, talks about the Irish problems of overpopulation and food shortage.
Features and themes
Gulliver first lands in Laputa. Laputans are a satire to England colonialism. The world of the Laputans is also a world of lightness, where ideas are liberated from the constraints of reality. From here Gulliver journeys to another two islands, Glubbdubdrib and Luggnagg, Here Gulliver meets Struldbrugs of Luggnagg who tells him that elderly will be kept alive
Lilliputian's world
In "Gulliver's Travels"by Jonathan Swift, the first Book focuses on Gulliver's first voyage, that he finds himself shipwrecked on the island of Lilliput, inhabited by tiny people. Initially, the Lilliputians are terrified of Gulliver's immense size and think he might be a threat. They trying to restrain him, Gulliver's curiosity leads him to learn their culture, society, and governance. He helps in their war against other island, Blefuscu. It explores themes of cruelty, pettiness, provincialism, and the ridiculousness of political and ideological disputes.
