もちはもちごめをつかいます。

Mochi is made with mochigome (glutinous rice).

Steam Rice

Pound Rice

もちをつくるために、ごはんをむして、つぶしてつくります。

To make mochi, rice is steamed, mashed, then made into mochi.

03. かたち

もちはまるいかたちやしかくいかたちでつくられます。 Mochi is made in round or rectangle shape.

まるいかたちはでんとうてきなやすみのためです。 The round shape is for traditional holidays.

glutinous rice

しかくいかたちはやきやぞうにに使われます。 The rectangular shape is used for grilling or in zouni soup.

もちのれきしはながいです。 Mochi has a long history. もちのれきしは二千ねんあります。 Mochi has existed for 2000 years.

むかしなまえはもちいでした。 It used to be named as Mochii. 日本人はごはんをつくるぶんかです。 The Japanese have a culture of making rice. だから、もちはいわいのたべものでした 。 So, Mochi was a celebrated food.

もちは日本のしんねんにとても大事です Mochi is very important for Japanese new year.

もちはたくさんの日本のやすみでも食べます. Mochi is also eaten in many Japanese holidays.

1. 日本のうちでは、もちはおしょうがつにかざります. In Japanese house, they decorate Mochi in New Year. 2. かがみもちといって、まるいおもちです。おもちの上に　みかん（だいだい）を　かざります。 It’s called kagami mochi and round mochi. A mandarin (daidai) is decorated on top of the mochi. 3. これはおぞうにです。おしょうがつのたべものです。スープの中にもちをいれます。 This is ozoni. It is a food for New Year's. Mochi is placed in the soup. 4. これは　でんとうてきなもちつきです。おしょうがつのまえにたくさんの　日本人はもちつきをします。 This is traditional mochi pounding. Before New Year, many Japanese people make mochi.

さくらもちはピンクのもちの中にあんこがはいっています。さくらもちをさくらのはでつつみます. だから、いいかおりがします。 Sakuramochi has (sweet red bean paste) inside pink mochi, wrapped in a cherry leaf. So, it has a nice smell.

しろと ピンクとみどりです。しろはゆき、ピンクははる、みどりはなつのはをあらわしています。 It is white, pink, and green. The white represents snow, the pink represents spring, and the green represents summer leaves.

やきもちはおいしいです。いいにおいがします。 Yaki(grilled mochi) is very good. It has a good smell.

だいふくはあんこやくだものがもちの中にあります。 Daifuku is the mochi with sweet red bean paste and fruit inside.

もちアイスクリームもとてもゆうめいです。とてもしんせんです.　 Mochi ice cream is also famous. Very fresh.

もちはとてもねばねばです。だから、ゆっくり食べてください. Mochi is very sticky. Please eat slowly.

In Korea and China, there are sweets similar to mochi.

Mochi can be bought at supermarket.

Mochi can be used as souvenirs when travel.
