Key Rules for Silent "R":

  • Silent at the end of words: When "R" appears at the end of a word and is not followed by a vowel sound, it is silent. Example: car, her, doctor.
  • Silent before a consonant: When "R" is followed by a consonant, it is silent. Example: hard, farm, morning. Linking R: When "R" is followed by a vowel sound in connected speech, it is pronounced. Example: car is → /kaː rɪz/.

In British English, the letter "r" is silent when the next sound is a consonant or when there is no sound after it. However, the "r" still indicates a vowel sound, either long and stressed or short and weak, depending on the syllable: Long and stressed: "Fork", "bird", "cart", "where" Short and weak: "Father", "other"
