TCA (Eating Disorders)

Can be recognized by a persistent pattern of unhealthy eating or dieting. Are associated with emotional, physical and social distress.

Restrictive type: low body weight by restricting food consumption and through exercise. Binge/purging type restrict food consumption but regulary engage in binge eating and elimination behaviors.

Anorexia Nervosa

Inability or unwillingness to maintain a normal or stable body weight. Frequently, women with anorexia nervosa stop having their menstrual period.

Subtypes

Bulimia Nervosa

Two subtypes:·The purging subtype (those who induce vomiting or use laxatives, diuretics, or enemas) ·The non-purgative subtype (people who use compensatory behaviors such as excessive exercise, dieting, or fasting)

People with bulimia nervosa experience episodes of binge eating (consuming a large amount of food in a short period of time and losing control during this). And attempts to “undo” the consequences of the binge using unhealthy compensatory practices.

Depression can make TCA or TCA can make depression

Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified

People with distorted eating behaviors, with symptoms similar to those of anorexia or bulimia but who do not meet one of the essential criteria for anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, may be diagnosed with a EDNOS. Binge eating disorder is an example of EDNOS.

Binge eating can include: ·Rapid eating of food ·Uncomfortable sense of fullness·Consuming large amounts of food when they are not hungry ·Feelings of shame

People with binge eating disorder have episodes of binge eating, but they don't regularly use compensatory behaviors to lose weight.
