About our project
Students
Wichita State University, a Division 1 program in Wichita, Kansas, serves 15,000 students and offers 15 sports. With no Division 1 soccer teams in Kansas, WSU has a unique opportunity to introduce a program that allows local athletes to compete at the highest level while staying close to home.

Research and support
Wichita State’s club soccer team, managed by students and featuring a player-coach, operates at an amateur level, focusing on entertainment, social connections, and fitness. By offering multiple Ph.D. programs, WSU can attract soccer players who have completed a four-year degree and redshirted a year, providing them opportunities to further their education while staying engaged in the sport.
As one of the fastest-growing sports in America, soccer presents a unique opportunity for Wichita State to capitalize by establishing a more structured program. This would enable students to compete against other schools, making the university more appealing to a broader audience, including Americans and international students seeking competitive college soccer opportunities.

Purpose/Goal
Details of new sport, program or activities
Adding this new sports organization would allow the school to be more attractive for a large audience of people. Students interested in playing soccer at a competitive level, people in the area who like to watch competitive soccer and students who completed a 4 year program while playing soccer and have registered a redshirt year.
The team will compete in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) at the D1 level. Both teams are allowed to have a maximum of 28 players on their roster.
What it is (name)
Wichita State Men and Women Soccer
The main goal of adding this program would be to offer a competitive and structured soccer program for all of those interested in this. With the fact of the university already having an amateur club founded out of pure interest for it, therefore we can conclude there is clear need from the student for the opportunity to play soccer.
When, where, what age group(s)
Fall 2026 Wichita State University will be able to launch their soccer program. Playing at Stryker's until a more permanent solution. Age group from 18 and older.

Unexpected travel costs
NCAA - D1
Starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, D1 men’s soccer programs will be allowed to offer 28 scholarships, up from the current limit of 9.9. D1 men’s soccer will have a maximum roster limit of 28. D1 soccer is already an equivalency sport and will continue to offer both partial and full scholarships to recruits.
The average scholarship amount for a men's soccer player in NCAA Division 1 is about $8,457 per year. However, coaches can divide scholarships among players as they see fit, so not all athletes receive full scholarships.
Wichita State plays in the AAC, the american athletic conference so the travel expenses are going to be expensive. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) spends $128.63 million on game expenses and travel. This however is combined with all sports and schools. Soccer is not a big travel expense compared to big sports like football.
Any questions?
Stryker Sport Complex
We propose that this newly founded soccer team could start off at the Stryker Sport Complex. This would save money as the school wouldn't need to build a stadium for the program and would offer both inside and outside turf fields.
- 1,800 general admission seats.
- Near K-96 and Greenwich
- About a 11 minute drive from campus
