WHAT IS THE LIFE CYCLE OF A BEE?

The life cycle of a honey bee is made up of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The process of a bee going through these stages is called complete "metamorphosis" because the bee's form changes drastically from the larva to the adult.

T he queen lays a single egg in each cell or wax socket intended for brooding. T he eggs are small, white, and oval and without segments.

Stage 1: the egg

Stage 2: the larvae

Just hatched from the egg, the larvae curl into a C-shape at the bottom of the cell, where the typical segments can be seen. T he larvae are white, blind, and limbless, with a wet sheen.

The metamorphosis of the larvae into pupae that will mature into adult insects takes place in the hidden intimacy of the operculum, under the closing wax of the cell.

Bees make honey by: Collecting nectar: Worker bees fly up to 5 km to search for flowers and nectar. The nectar is passed mouth-to-mouth from bee to bee until its moisture content is reduced .

Storing the nectar: The nectar is stored in the honeycomb cells. Drying out the nectar the bees fan their wings to create an air current inside the hive, which evaporates and thickens the nectar.

Capping the cell: The cell is capped with beeswax to store the honey. The color and flavor of honey depends on the nectar collected by the bees, nectar might be light in color or be dark amber. Honey has a long shelf life because of its low water content and acidic PH, which makes it inhospitable to bacteria and yeast.
