The concept of abuse applies to any human action where there is a precondition of uneven power, be it in relation to objects, beings, legislation, beliefs or values. There are different types of abuse such as: physical abuse; psychological abuse; sexual abuse; neglect.

Reasons

Most of the time, abusers' behaviors and reasons derive from psychological problems or simply from the abuser's evil and pleasure in seeing the victim suffer. Most of the time, the pleasure of practicing such activities is enough for the abuser.

WHERE CAN IT BE FOUND

Identifying

Abuse mostly comes from relatives, friends or superiors who tend to share the same environment as the victim. It can also come from strangers.

CONSEQUENCES

Being abused has a lot of consequences: - Physical abuse in infants and young children can lead to brain dysfunction and sometimes death. - Abused kids have a lot of mental problems (an abused chil is more likely to try to commit suicide and self-mutilation). - Abuse can lead children to engage in aggressive and antisocial behavior. - Abuse in adolescence can lead to teenage pregnancy and intimacy and sexual problems. - Abuse in adolescence can also lead to alcoholism and drugs addiction.

HOW CAN ONE HELP?

What to do if a child reveals abuse?

1. Provide a safe space for the young person to share. 2. Let them know they've done the right thing telling you. 3. Tell them it's not their fault. 4. Listen to them and understand their needs. 5. Do not push the child for answers, allow them to share as much as they are comfortable with.
