Take a look at the flowchart in the Funding folder, linked below, which goes through the process of what to ask/advise when a student hasn't got their Student Finance loan yet. Take a look at the following PRIDs and work through the flowchart to know what to advise them. Look at both ESIS and the HEP Portal for your answers. Imagine for all that we are speaking to them on the 16th October 2024!

Students can permit Funding to discuss information about their application with SLC (Student Loans Company). Students grant permission via the online account or by calling 0300 100 0607. The process is the same however they contact them, see below.

Notify Student Finance when withdrawing. We advise similar for intermitting and changing courses. After submitting a withdrawal form, the funding team informs Student Finance England (SFE) via a Change of Circumstance. Funding reassessment: Tuition Fee Loans and Maintenance Loans are recalculated. Future loan payments are cancelled. Check the fees liability policy for the withdrawal date's impact on owed tuition fees. Mid-term withdrawals: Overpayment of loans may occur, requiring repayment. Discuss repayment options with the Student Loans Company (SLC). Overpayment of Maintenance Loans is calculated from the withdrawal date.
If a student's income has decreased since the year they provided details for, they can request a current year income assessment. Here's how: Submit a current year income assessment form to Student Finance. Keep Student Finance informed of any changes during the year. Provide final income figures at the tax year's end. Parents or partners in the household must also complete the form, even if only one income has changed.
Students repeating a year for the first time with no prior higher education can get a 'gift'year. They should apply as normal to Student Finance. Students with prior repeats or higher education experience: Funding may not be available. For guidance, contact the Funding team.

I think they'd need a pretty darn good reason to get more funding if they've not been able to pass again don't you? How much is this for... A million... Wow... You've done... *the phone line cuts out*

Shouldn't go failing should ya! Depends on if they have been in education before I guess. But if it's their first time in education, surely Student Finance can't be that mean?!

Postgraduate students automatically get funding if they have applied in their first year and their course covers two years...

- Students must reapply for funding every year.
- Posters from the Funding team typically advertise when applications open for the next academic year.
- Encourage students to apply early to ensure timely funding, though applications are accepted up to 9 months after the academic year starts.
- Processing takes up to 6 weeks.
- Students must apply based on their usual residence (e.g., apply to SAAS if you reside in Scotland outside term time).
Wildcard tip
Hmmm, don't we tend to ask for students' permission to speak someone else on their behalf? Would this not be the same for Student Finance?

The funding team confirms once a student registers. Check if the student originally planned to study elsewhere: Ask for their SSN (usually starts with SFDU; may be in ESIS). Verify this in the HEP portal. If not confirmed, contact Funding.
Late Funding Loan: Covers basic living costs (not rent or tuition). Available to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Application Process: Register and apply via Blackbullion. It's important to know where to find information on the loan during registration periods. The link to the webpage and terms and conditions are below for you to read.
A student who has used their gift year may still qualify for a Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance/Special Support Grants if they provide evidence of compelling personal reasons (CPR) like illness or bereavement. Without CPR evidence, they must cover tuition fees but can still receive Maintenance Loans and other grants (e.g., Disabled Students’ Allowance). To apply for repeat funding on CPR grounds, they submit a letter with supporting evidence (e.g., doctor’s note) to Student Finance, including the Customer Reference Number, via online or recorded mail. Part-time undergraduates and postgraduates are not eligible for repeat year funding, even with CPR. Postgraduates can receive CPR funding for a new course only if they withdraw from their current course, but it’s not guaranteed. For any issues, the Funding Team can assist.
For undergraduate students: If no loan is approved by registration during the Autumn term, they will be invoiced for tuition fees. Time is allowed for loan approval after registration. For postgraduate students: Loan approval must occur before registration. If not approved, they must pay the first instalment of their annual tuition fee to register.
