Eliane Vogel Polsky

Eliane Vogel Polsky was born on the 5th of July 1926 in Ghent, in Belgium and died on the 13th November 2015. She was Belgian; however, her parents were Russian and were jews. She is an important figure in the fight for equality between genders, an ongoing struggle that is present today and that occupies an important place within our society. She became a lawyer and married André Albert Vogel, another lawyer. Together, they had 3 children whose name are Jean, Alain et Laurent.

Introduction

In 1958, Eliane Vogel Polsky obtained 3 degrees all in social law: international social law, comparative social law and community social law. Ten years after, she did feminist studies. She became a lawyer but also taught social studies as a professor.

Studies

Eliane was defending women’s rights as soon as she had an opportunity. She is remembered mostly for the 119th article of the treaty of Rome which is nicknamed after her. During the redaction of the articles of the treaty mentioned earlier, France’s representant got inspired by the United Nations Declaration of Rights and suggesting adding a law for women. This law stated that they should be paid as much as men. Eliane heartily supported France and fought so that the law would be accepted.

Her fight for women’s rights

Eliane started out as a labour law expert: she defended several strikes in the 1960’s. However, as soon as a case involving defending women’s rights happened, she would often volunteer to be the lawyer of the women. The Defrenne and Sabena case was her most famous case in which age discrimination was the main topic.
