Climate change impact

Major issues:Location and envionrment - Bangladesh has a very low elevation, making it even more vunerable to flooding and sea level rise. The country is also located on a large river delta making it suseptible to flooding from both the norh and east. On its south the indian ocean causes flooding due to tropical cyclones and other large storms. Bangladesh also has a very large population density causing each envionmental hazard to the area have massive consequences.Himilian glacier melting - The Himilayan glaciers play a large role in the south asian ecosystem, however due to climate change they also pose a dangerous threat. The melting of himilayan glaciers due to increased global temperatures threatens to water log the river delta Bangladesh is located on causing disasterous consequences to many agurcultural and urban areas.Cyclones and storm surges - Due to global warming The indian ocean is steadily becoming warmer, which incerases the frequency of large storms. Bangladesh's enviornment prevents it from being good at tanking large storms with minimal reprucussions.Urbanization and population - Most of Bangladesh's population is located on the coast and is also the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. If Bangladesh ever faces a large storm surge or flooding problem, the densely populated areas will have no where to go. As mentioned earlier Bangledesh is sandwhiched between a two rivers and an ocean so any flooding will be disasterous to the entire country. Sea level rise - By 2050 bangladesh is predicted to loose more than 17% of its land due to sea level rise. Since most of Bangladesh's inhabited land is located on the coast line, rising sea levels will have devistating effects on the majority of Bangladesh's citizens. Most costline areas will need to be evacuated to the north, where the land is much less developed. Agulcultural land will need to be destroyed to make room for urban development.

What is currently being done?

Bangladesh

Current plans and improvements:Bangladesh currently has a massive plan in place known as the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP) to try and adapt to incoming climate change as well as to mitigate the damage. This plan is split into 6 pieces, 5 being related to adaptation and the last relating to mitigation. To simplify, Bangladesh is currently focusing on preparing its country for the climate crisis, by re-excavating canals and rivers to better accomidate flooding, building more flood and storm proof sustainable housing at affordable prices. Bangladesh is also experimenting with cleaner energy in order to reduce carbon emissions. Bangladesh plans to reduce carbon emmissions by 21.8 percent by 2030.

Where else is this happening?

Climate change is a global occurance. The rising of temperatures due to green house gasses effects every where around the world differently. Some in costal cities have to deal with rising sea levels and an increased frequency of large storms, while those off the coast deal with agurcultural issues casued by th eincrease in temperature. Areas experiencing similar issues as Bangladesh are costal countries close to the equator. Some countries include Indonesia, Afghanistan, Somalia, Nigeria and Chad.
