The Byzantine Empire was created in 330 A.D. The Byzantine Empire was formed by the Eastern Roman Empire. This empire survived for almost a thousand years after the Western portions of the Roman Empire collapsed. The Byzantine Empire being born is signigicant becaue it was the start of one of the most well-known empires in history.

Justin (Justinian's uncle) and Justinian were originally peasants but moved to the Byzantine Empire to start a better life. Both of them became part of the militarty. Then, after the current empereor had died, Justin became emperor. After this, Justinian became emperor Justinian was an incredible emperor. He did many things to improve the life of his people. As well as take care of people's lives. Some of the many things that he did were, took back terretory that the Roman's originally had, built many imporant peicies of architecture, and so much more! Justinian becoming emperor was significant becaue he was the able to get so close to bring the Old Western Roman Empire and The Byzantine Empire together.

Theodora was a vey bright person who had many great ideas. Theodora was originally an actress. This meant that she could not mary Justinian because there was a law. After some time though, he removed the law so that he could mary Theodora. Theodora passed down laws to help protect women, children, and some Christian minority groups. She evem saved Justinians abily to rule! At one point, some of Justinian opponets revolted against him. He was about to leave but Theodora insisted he stayed there and fight. Theodora was significant becaue she helped Justinian rule, saved his crown, and was one of the most well known women in the Byznatine empire.

The Justinian Code was completed in 534 A.D. The Justinian Code rewrote confusing Roman laws and put them into one book called the Justinian Code. This code has formed the Eurpoean law until modern times. The Justinian Code was complted was significant becaue without the Justinian Code,the law and government would have been a mess.

The Hagia Sophia was completed in 537 A.D. It took about 5-6 years for it to be completed. The Hagia Sophia was orginaly a church. After sometime it became a mosque. Now, it is a museum. The Hagia Sophia is a beautiful piece of architecture. The translating of Hagia Sophia is, "Holy Wisdom". The Hagia sophia was and still is significant because it was a religious, political, and artistic place.

The Justinian Plague was a plague that spreaded thoughout the Byzantine Empire. The outbreak might have possibly occured by rats carrying the deasease while on grain ships arriving from egypt. The Justinian Plague was significant becaue it weakened the Byzantine Empire at one point.

The East-West Shism happened in 1054 A.D. This schism occured because there were arguements that happened due to the way the East and the West were developing. This lead to one final split. Some of the arguments include, whether or not to allow icons, whether the holy spirt has the father and son or only the son, and may more. Also, the East-West schism occured because the pope excommunicated the patraich. In return, the patraich excommuniacted the pope. This great schism is significant because it formally seperated the Roman Catholic Church from the Eastern Orthdox Church, which forever split the Christian church.

The Battle of Manzikert signifified the end of Byzantine power in Turkey. This is because The Byzantines lost Anatolia to the Seljuq Turks. Due to this loss, conflicts and an economic crisis occured. After this, the ability to defend there borders decreased. This is significant because this event in time shows that the Byzantines did lose land.

The Fourth Crusaders happended because Pope Innocent III wanted to have Christian control over the holy land. The Forth Crusaders were a Western Europeana armed expedition. The Fouth Crusaders are considered to be one of the reasons why The East-West Shism occcured. The Fourth Crusaders were significant becaue they were one of the reasons why The East-West Schism occured.
