Here are some additional supports to consider when working with multilingual learners:
Repeat exercises in small, frequent sessions, and allow time to practice
If students are literate in their native language, focus on the differences between that language and English.
Collaborate with your district or school multilingual learner specialist and/or speech language pathologist to support MLs acquisition of English
Use multisensory activities like clapping out syllables or using blocks to represent sounds.
Model segmentation and blending with exaggerated pronunciation to help students clearly hear English sounds.
Use visual cues, like pictures and objects.
Use songs and rhymes that highlight sound patterns
Provide additional work on English phonemes that are not present in MLs’ native language.
