Welcome to the Mines

What social and economic factors led to child labor becoming common in Pennsylvania mines?

Next

What makes Pennsylvania unique in its supply of coal?

Next

Toxic gases, possible cave-ins, suffocation, explostions, and heavy manual machinery made working in the mines a dangerous job. Many miners got lung disease: black lung

PENNSYLVANIA MINING TOWNS

Next

Let's visit a modern mine. Are modern mines safer than mines in the 1800s and 1900s?

Next

Should the United States design a plan to phase out coal power? Why or why not?

Be extra safe by turning your lesson in blank now! Don't forget!

Good News! In 1905, Pennsylvania BANNED child labor in the mines. Therefore, you must leave the mine for your safety!

You survived the mines!

DISCUSS WITH YOUR GROUP: What is each map trying to show us? Return to the main room once you have an answer.

ANTHRACITE COAL
  1. Show up for your shift on time.
  2. Respect your co-workers.
  3. Have on-topic discussions.
  4. Help your co-workers and supervisor.
  5. Ask the mining supervisor for help.

The mine is a hazardous place! Put on your hard hat and read the rules to make sure you are being safe!

Silver is extracted from the ore Argentite. It has the highest electrical conductivity.

What are the pros and cons?

  1. Consider the safety of underground vs surface mining.
  2. Consider the environmental impact of underground vs surface mining.

Let’s look at what it would have been like to shop at the company store in 1925 if you were a family living there.

Eckley, a miner's village in PA, is one among hundreds of company-owned mining towns or “patch towns” that cropped up across Northeastern Pennsylvania’s coal fields throughout the nineteenth century. Built cheaply and designed to enforce strict industrial discipline, company towns like Eckley speak to the almost unchecked power of the coal companies. But they also reflect the ways that working families challenged company control and carved out small areas of independence and opportunity in an otherwise unrelenting environment.

Discuss in breakout rooms.

How does mining impact the economy?

The Industrial Revolution took place during the 1800s. How did the invention of new technology change the United States coal industry?

US Coal Production

  • Coal formed in PA about 300 million years ago!
  • As the Appalachian Mountains formed, heat and pressure from mountain building made Anthracite Coal.
  • In the late 1700s, the coal was discovered in PA, kicking off PA's steel industry.

You're just in time to start your shift at the mine! Don't worry too much about labor laws. In 1901, children 8 years and older can work in the mines! In Pennsylvania, we have an abundance of Anthracite Coal waiting to be extracted! Once you learn about mining, I'm sure we can find the right job for you!

DISCUSS WITH YOUR GROUP: How did copper most likely form in the locations on map #1? Be specific! Return to the main room once you have an answer.

Task #2

Copper is extracted from the ore Chalcopyrite. Copper ore is often found in volcanic areas.
