Passport to Multicultural Literature
Diverse book collections are important for at least two reasons. First, they can facilitate the kind of discussion and understanding that informs and promotes social change (Lawrence, 2020, 2021; Winston, 2010). Language does not exist in isolation, but is influenced by the social and cultural context through which it takes place. It is important that the books chosen reflect students’ experiences because this allows them to problematize issues related to power and privilege (Osorio, 2018).
