Introduction

Sikhism or Sikhi is a monotheistic religion that originated in the punjab region of South Asia in the late 15th century.It was founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469-1539) and developed further by nine successive Sikh gurus. It is the 5th largest organised religion in the world, with over 25 million members primarily in India but also in communities worldwide.

Core beliefs:

The 5 main beliefs in Sikhism are:

1-Monotheism:Sikhs believe in one universal god waheguru ( wonderful teacher), they also believe that god id formless,eternal and omnipresent ,accessible to everyone regardless of caste,creed or gender2-Equality:Sikhism emphasises the equality of all humans,rejecting discrimination of all types.3-Service and charity:Service to humanity {known as seva) and sharing with others(through community kitchens or langar)are central to Sikh practices4-Earning an honest living-Sikhs are encouraged to work honestly and avoid exploitation.5-Spiritual and temporal balance: Sikhism teaches a balanced life integrating spiritual devotion with social responsibility.

Key practices:1- Naam Japna: Meditation and rememberance of God's name.2- Kirat Karni: Earning a livelihood through honest means.3-Vand Chakna:Sharing with others,especially the less fortunate Important concepts:1-Mool Manter:The fundamental statement of Sikh philosophy, recited at the beginning of prayers.2-Rehat Maryada:The Sikh code conduct.3-Chardi Kala:Maintaining a positive and optimistic outlook in all situations big and small.

Unlike some religions,Sikhism does not place heavy emphasis on pilgrimage as a means to achieve spiritual growth,instead Sikhs are encouraged to see god as omnipresent and focus on internal devotion and righteous living however visiting historical gurduwaras holds cultural,historical and spiritual significance.

Major celebrations,place of worship and sacred text:

The Guru Granth Sahib is the centeral scripture and eternal Guru of sikhism,it contains hymns and teachings from Sikh Gurus as well as other saints from different faiths.Sikhs gather at gurduwaras(meaning 'door to the guru')for prayer and community activities.The golden temple in Amritsar is the holiest Gurduwara.

Major celebrations:Vaisakhi:Celebrates thre formation of the Khalsa.Guru Nanak Gurupurbab:Marks the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.Diwali/Bandi chhor divas:Commemorates the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from imprisonment.
