Background information
Gonzalo is a 12-year-old boy from Guatemala who lives in a poor neighborhood in Cleveland (Ohio). He comes from a family of immigrants, and he acts as a translator for his grandfather, Tío Juan, who does not speak English very well. Tío Juan (Gonzalo’s great-uncle) has a deep connection to the land and plants, as he used to be a farmer in Guatemala. However, Tío Juan is now an old man who is not adapting very well to life in the United States, particularly due to the language barrier and his age.

Traditions
Growing beans is a tradition passed down through generations, much like Tío Juan’s own farming skills. In Guatemala, growing beans is often done in small family plots, and the harvest is shared among family members. This resonates with the theme of community in the book, where people come together through the garden.
The atol is one of the most drinked drinks in Guatemala, Originally, it was a sweetened cooking of corn flour in water, in such proportions that at the end it had a moderate viscosity and a certain thickness.
The tamales are one of the most typical foods in Guatemala. It is based on corn mass, stuffed with various ingredients, and cooked in a package of vegetable leaves.
