The main character is a teenager who lives in the small town of Woodsboro. The tranquility of the place ended when a masked killer, known as Ghostface, begins to stalk and kill young people. The killer follows a macabre pattern of horror movies, testing the "rules" of the genre while manipulating and terrorizing his victims.

Sidney finds himself at the center of the attacks, as he deals with the trauma of his mother's murder a year earlier. Throughout the film, she and her friends try to unravel who is behind Ghostface's mask. The twist occurs when the killer is revealed to be Billy Loomis, Sidney's boyfriend, and his accomplice, Stu Macher.

Billy has personal motives, while Stu claims that the "pressure" drove him to commit the crimes.
