The Plan for Today: Unit 5 5.1.1 Trades That Sell and Serve Goals:
Vocabulary
Hospitality
Think About It...
- Edwin loves working in the hotel industry; however, he wants to do more in the hotel than just work at the front desk.
- Right now, he is very content with the job but knows that potentially getting a degree could help him move out from working at the front desk in the future.
- Explain a pro of Edwin going to college for a business degree.
- Explain two cons of him going after a business degree.
- You learned about trades focused on serving others, like cosmetology, cooking, and dog grooming, which involve direct customer interaction.
- Cosmetology is a trade because it involves learning specialized skills to provide services like haircuts, not selling products or building physical items.
- Service trades include more than cooking and appearance services, with hospitality being a major category.
- Hospitality involves welcoming and hosting guests and spans industries like hotels, restaurants, retail, and travel.
- In the U.S., hotels account for 1 in 25 jobs.

Jobs in the Hospitality Industry
Question...
- Hospitality jobs are often acquired through applications and on-the-job learning.
- Skills gained in one role can transfer to future positions.
- Most jobs prefer prior experience to save time and resources on training.
Why Is Hospitality Considered a Trade?
Question...
Why Is Hospitality Considered a Trade?
- Tourism in Beijing, China, has grown significantly over the past decade.
- China opened more hospitality vocational schools to meet the demand for skilled workers.
- Hospitality demand rises with increased travel and tourism.
- More visitors create a need for hotels, airlines, restaurants, and shopping.
- Many countries promote tourism to boost hospitality demand.
Question...
- The United States offers the same vocational school programs for hospitality. Individuals may be interested in these types of programs for two different reasons.
- The first may be to enter into the field of hospitality. These individuals do not already have a job within a hotel, restaurant, airline, or retail business and have interests in positions that may not be entry-level.
- The second may be that those who already work in hospitality want to move up.
- Management positions do not require certificates from a vocational school; a person can work their way up to promotions, but this may not be easy or take a long time.
- When you work in one of these industries, you may become proficient at one position very well, but moving into management means another level of skills you do not currently have.
- Getting a certificate from a vocational program allows you to learn a broader range of skills faster and to signal to your employer that you are qualified for a higher role.
