Working with high school groups
start
Working with teenagers can be challenging but also highly rewarding. Volunteering at the Arboretum provides students with opportunities to acquire new skills and knowledge, particularly in ecology, horticulture, and conservation. Giving back to the community triggers endorphin release, diminishes stress, and increases happiness. Volunteering fosters responsibility, communication improvement, and empathy. Students learn teamwork and foster a sense of ownership and pride in the local environment
Essential skills to develop for effectively leading high school volunteer groups

- Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
- Problem-solving
- Role modeling

Remember the best way to work with high school volunteers is by showing you are the expert and the person who knows what and how needs to be done.
Give students opportunities to take on leadership roles within the group. This helps them develop a sense of responsibility and ownership
Leads should lead by example and demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and dedication to the project. Recognize and celebrate the achievements and efforts of the group. Positive reinforcement can boost their confidence and motivation
Understanding and empathizing with others' feelings and perspectives can help in building relationships and motivating the team. Understanding the unique challenges and pressures high school students face can help you connect with them on a deeper level.
Unexpected challenges may arise during volunteer projects, and leaders should be able to think quickly and find creative solutions to overcome obstacles. You can show them to be adaptable in the face of challenges
The ability to inspire and motivate others is a hallmark of great leadership. This involves setting a positive example and encouraging the team to achieve the best. HIgh school students are at a stage where they are exploring their identities and interests. Inspire them by setting a positive example and encouraging them to pursue their passion.
Clear and concise communication is crucial. This includes listening actively, articulating ideas clearly, and adapting your communication style to different audiences. High school students respond well to clear, direct communication.
