How women are contimuing the fight for basic human rights and freedoms today
Woman’s Suffrage to a Women’s Right to choose
-Elizabeth Cady StantonSeneca Falls Convention 1848
“We are assembled to protest against a form of government, existing without the consent of the governed—to declare our right to be free as man is free, to be represented in the government which we are taxed to support, to have such disgraceful laws as give man the power to chastise and imprison his wife, to take the wages which she earns, the property which she inherits, and, in case of separation, the children of her love.”
The goals and vision of the women's suffrage movement centered around achieving the right to vote, promoting gender equality, and expanding women’s roles in society. Women involved in the movement envisioned a society where women would have equal say in political decisions, believing that suffrage was essential to advancing their personal rights and freedoms and ensuring the women after them were afforded the same basic human rights.
A Women's Right to Choose
A Woman's Right to Vote
Roe vs. Wade being overturned by the United States Supreme Court in June of 2022 resulted in the immediate stripping of a woman’s right to control her own body and removed a woman’s right to choose. Just as the suffragists of the past fought to secure a voice in a society that denied them political power, today’s advocates are demanding control over their own bodies and reproductive choices.

Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibits racial discrimination in voting.
A printed sources published during this period reveal that Americans held highly stereotypical notions about women's and men's roles in society.
The ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 granting American women the right to vote and cemented the legacy of those individuals who fought tirelessly for equal rights.
A major milestone included the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, which marked the first organized demand for women’s suffrage.

The fight for a woman’s right to vote in the late 19th and early 20th centuries parallels the current struggle for women’s reproductive rights and highlights the continued battle for individual autonomy and equality between genders.
Evolution of women's rights
Just as the suffrage movement was driven by the conviction that women deserve the same rights and opportunities as men and that their ability to participate in political decisions was essential to their freedom and well-being, this modern fight for reproductive rights centers on the idea that a woman’s body is her own and that her choices should not be restricted by government mandates. Both of these struggles reflect a broader desire for women to have the same control over their lives as men do. They lend to the broader idea that both men and women, of all races and belief systems, should have an equal standing in society and should be afforded the right to make decisions about their own health and future.

the current fight for equality
The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022 marked a significant regression in women's reproductive rights, removing them as a guaranteed human right.

Nearly two years after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a majority of Americans continue to express support for abortion access.
Why Is This Important?
In many states, the overturning of Roe v. Wade has led to significant changes in women's reproductive rights, resulting in a restrictive environment for abortion access. Following the Supreme Court's decision, many states enacted "trigger laws" that were designed to ban most abortions almost immediately. This law made it illegal to perform an abortion except in cases of medical emergencies.
Loss of Personal Freedoms
Legal Consequences
The consequences of Roe vs. Wade being overturned extends far beyond immediate access to abortion; they also impact women's overall autonomy and ability to make informed choices about their reproductive health. The restrictive environment fosters a climate of fear among both patients and healthcare providers, limiting discussions around reproductive options.
the consequences
unintended consequences
The current political landscape in the United States reveals a troubling trajectory where the rights of citizens are under continuous attack, particularly as leadership positions consolidate power. This polarization fosters an environment where citizens fear for their rights, believing that a loss in any one area could lead to further encroachments. As women's reproductive rights are stripped away, the potential for additional rights to be removed grows and casts a shadow over the freedoms of all marginalized populations. The implications of this decision extend far beyond individual choice; they signal a negative trend that could further entrench inequality and diminish the rights of many in society.
Looking to the future, I aspire for my daughters to inherit a world where their rights are not only recognized but respected and they are given the freedom to make decisions about their own lives. The changes I seek extend beyond reproductive rights; they encompass a broader vision of gender equality and social justice, where all individuals have the freedom to shape their destinies and live without constraints imposed by outdated norms or oppressive systems.

What I Can do
A Timeline of Action

Nov. 7
Nov.5
My timeline in taking action to support a woman's right to choose began with a pivotal step: voting on November 5th, 2024 for leaders who advocate for reproductive rights and women's healthcare.
As an individual committed to supporting women's right to choose in Wyoming, I plan to take proactive steps by partnering with the Wyoming Women's Foundation and Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains. My primary action will involve volunteering with the Wyoming Women's Foundation to assist in their advocacy and educational initiatives. My experience as a teacher will allow me to design and implement educational initiatives and organize informational events and discussions, I hope to inform and mobilize community members around the significance of protecting women's autonomy over their own bodies.
the goal
The two Wyoming laws that passed in 2023 had been temporarily suspended by Judge Owens, pending her ruling. One law banned abortion outright and the other, the first in the nation, that specifically banned medication abortion, were challenged by plaintiffs in the pursuit of bodily autonomy in the state of Wyoming and across the nation.
Wyoming
current victories
November 18, 2024 Judge Melissa Owens ruled that state laws banning abortion violated individual's rights to health care, as well as the Wyoming Constitution. Judge Owens said the abortion laws "impede the fundamental right to make health care decisions for an entire class of people, pregnant women."
Even if we succeed in reinstating Roe v. Wade, or enacting similar legislation that guarantees all women the right to choose and make their own healthcare decisions, the reality is that advocacy will always be necessary.
The continuing Fight
What Went Well
What I Can Do Differently
Reflecting on the Experience
The struggle for reproductive rights highlights the lack of social justice experienced by women and minorities, as marginalized groups often face greater barriers in exercising their rights. By advocating for a woman's right to choose, we are challenging systemic inequalities that disproportionately affect low-income individuals, people of color, and those in rural communities. Ensuring that all people have the autonomy to make decisions about their bodies is essential for achieving true equity in healthcare in our country. This fight transcends gender, as it encompasses a broader commitment to dismantling the oppressive structures that limit personal freedoms, ultimately fostering a society where every individual can exercise their rights without fear or restriction.
Complacency Equates to Acceptance
The Fight for Equal Rights is Continuous
I urge others to consider the implications that the removal of these basic human rights could have on their mothers, sisters, aunts, and daughters. The erosion of reproductive rights not only diminishes the freedoms women will experience throughout their lives but may also lead to dire consequences. I call upon everyone to reflect on their own lives and ask themselves if they truly value the freedom to make their own decisions. If the answer is yes, then it is imperative to ask whether it is justifiable to remove that freedom from others.
