If you were a member of CCA's photography club you may still have Adobe PhotoShop on your computer.
Candid Moment
For the middle of your photo story you can include candid moments in which your subjects are asked not to look into the camera and are busy with their own activities, as with this teacher, who is busy demonstrating chemical bonds to students.
Closing Image
A closing image is the ending of your photo story. Students walking in the hallway of a school works perfectly as a closing image. Notice how the photographer showcases the entire location rather than including only a few people in the photograph.

STEP 1: Planning
STEP 1: Plan your Photo Story Select a Theme: Choose a simple and clear theme or topic for your photo story. Daily life (walking dog, making sandwich, or playing a game), sports, or an event. 📸 Plan Shots: Plan the order of your images to ensure your story includes a beginning (opening), middle, and ending (closing). Identify Key Moments: List the specific moments or scenes you want to capture.
Opening Image
The opening image is the beginning of a photo story. An empty classroom acts as a good opening image. Be sure to include an opening image in your photo story.
Beginning, Middle, & Ending Images
Beginning, Middle, & Ending Shots
- Beginning/Opening Shot: This image should “set the stage” for your photo story.
- Middle Shots: Detail, candid, and posed images all work for middle images.
- Ending/Closing shots: The closing shot should provide an ending to your photo story.
Camera, Props, & Location:
- Gather your camera and all the necessary props you will need for your shots.
- Location: Make sure the background is clear of clutter or adds context to your story and make sure there is enough available light for proper exposure!
- What compositional techniques, angles, and perspectives will you use for each shot to effectively communicate your story?
- Vary the position of your subject if you're using a model try poses like Candid Moments, Detailed Images, and Posed Subjects.
- What do you want the viewers to see? Who or what is in focus?
- What is the setting of this photograph? Make sure there's no distracting clutter in the background.
- Does the image communicate what you want it to communicate?

Posed Image
Look for some posed subjects if required. Avoid repeating the same environment by ensuring that your subject appears in different locations. The image on the right showcases a girl posing for the camera with a pile of books in a school library.
