By the end of this activity you should be able to: 1. Explain a life cycle.2. Explain the reason for different lengths of time within a life cycle.

What is a life cycle?
- A life cycle is the sequence of biological changes that occur in the life of an organism, starting at birth ending at death.
- Not all organisms life cycle are similar or occur at the same rate.
- A life cycle can be shown graphical as series of related processes, grouped into stages of major life events.

All living things go through life cycles. A life cycle shows how living organisms grow and develop over time, usually with several stages of life.

Animals Life Cycles
Animal life begins with the formation of a fertilized egg or with the live birth of a baby. The animal will develop and grow eventually reaching adulthood. In adulthood, the primary function is to mate and reproduce new offspring (babies). Each species (type of animal) has their own unique life cycle based on the complexity of the organisms external and internal structures (different cells). Seen below are two examples of animal life cycles, with the fruit fly that has an average life cycle of 50 days compared to a mouse (which is more complex) that as an average life cycle 4 years.

Plants start as seeds or spores. Over the course of the plant’s life cycle the plant will germinate and develop a way to make new seeds or spores. Most plants develop flowers or fruit to carry new seed to create new plants and start the cycle over again. As seen in the diagram below the plant’s life cycle begins as a seed, then during germination the plant develops into a seedling, and eventually into a flowering plant that develops new seeds. Similar to animals often the more complex the plant is, the longer the life cycle of the ogranism, Compare a giant sequoia to a piece of algae.
