Can you describe a personal goal that's important to you right now?

This question encourages students to think about personal aspirations beyond academics. If the student can't describe a goal, ask follow-up questions to help them brainstorm goals. Do they want to finish a school project on time? Do they want to have better sleep habits so they don't feel tired in the morning? Ask as many follow-up questions as needed to get an idea of what they want to accomplish.

Why do you care about your goal? What motivates you to achieve it?

This questions helps you identify intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that you can leverage to help them. If they have trouble identifying motivators, explain what intrinsic and extrinsic motivators are and give examples from your own life.

What challenges do you anticipate facing? How will you overcome those challenges?

This question helps students anticipate potential obstacles, fostering a proactive mindset. When you understand what challenges could be ahead and you realize that it's not going to be easy all the time when working towards a goal, you can focus on having a growth mindset when obstacles arise.

How do you plan to measure your progress towards this goal?

This question encourages students to think about measurable milestones that will benefit them. You can walk them through how to measure a goal and celebrate small wins along the way.

How will you hold yourself accountable to this goal?

This question prompts students to think about accountability mechanisms. Remember that you, as a Peer Mentor, should be someone that helps them stay accountable by regularly checking in on them and keeping track of what goals they want to work on.
