LA REALTA' CHE NON CONOSCIAMO
IL TRAFFICO DEI DIAMANTI
The diamond trafficking in Africa is one of the emblematic issues of the impact of globalization on the continent’s natural resources. While Africa possesses some of the richest diamond mines in the world, the trade of these gems has historically been marked by exploitation, violence and corruption. These are the so-called “blood diamonds” The report aims to analyze the causes and impacts of diamond trafficking in Africa, assessing the social, economic, and environmental consequences of the phenomenon and effectiveness of international measures to combat the trade of “blood diamonds”. The report is divided into four parts: In the first part, we analyze the deep roots of this trade, when the first mines were discovered in South Africa. We delve in particular into the diamond extraction techniques, from rudimentary methods to manual extraction In the second part, we analyze the main characteristics of the diamond trade, the aspects hidden from public view. We explore the motivations of the African people to risk bloodying their hands to find and sell diamonds, focusing on the extremely dangerous working conditions and child exploitation. In the third part, we focus on the method of exporting diamonds to Europe, along with the positive and negative aspects this brings within the continent. We highlight analytical dates, the main stages of processing, and the distribution of diamonds to European jewelry stores, where they are sold to final consumers The conclusions highlight solutions and initiatives to stop the diamond trade. These efforts are divided into international interventions, actions by NGOs, and the promotion of responsible trade.
