El termino cultura hace referencia al conjunto de conocimientos, ideas, tradiciones y costumbres que caracterizan a un pueblo, a una clase social, a una época…
Un Patrimonio de la Humanidad, es un sitio específico que puede ser: desierto, edificación, bosque, montaña, lago, obra de arte, complejo o ciudad, que ha sido nominado y ratificado para su inclusión en la lista mantenida por el Programa Patrimonio de la Humanidad, que administra el Comité del Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO.
El objetivo principal del programa es catalogar, preservar y dar a conocer sitios de importancia cultural o natural excepcionales para la herencia común de la humanidad. En algunas circunstancias, los sitios patrimonios, pueden obtener fondos de la fundación para la conservación de los mismos.
En 1959, el gobierno egipcio decidió construir la presa de Asuán, lo que causaría la inundación del valle en el que se encontraban tesoros de enorme valor arqueológico como los templos Abu Simbel. Entonces la UNESCO lanzó una campaña internacional de protección, a pesar de las apelaciones de los gobiernos de Egipto y Sudán. Los templos de Abu Simel y de File fueron levantados, movidos a un sitio más alto y rejuntados pieza por pieza. El coste del proyecto fue de aproximadamente 80 millones de dólares, de los cuales casi la mitad fue obtenida de 50 países. Se consideró ampliamente un éxito, y llevó al desarrollo de nuevas campañas de protección, como la de salvar Venecia y su laguna, las ruinas de Mohenjo-Daro en Pakistán o el templo Borobudur en Indonesia. La UNESCO inició así, junto con el Consejo Internacional de Monumentos y Sitios, una convención para proteger el patrimonio cultural común de la humanidad.
Hasta el momento, el catálogo consta de un total de 851 sitios, de los cuales 660 son culturales, 166 naturales y 25 mixtos, distribuidos en 142 países. La UNESCO se refiere a cada sitio Patrimonio de la Humanidad con un número de identificación único, pero las nuevas inscripciones incluyen a menudo los sitios anteriores ahora enumerados como parte de descripciones más grandes. Consecuentemente, el sistema de numeración termina actualmente sobre 1.200, aunque realmente hay menos catalogados.
