INDEX

History: Women's Gymnastics

  • The Greeks thought that the mind and body were connected and that if you had a healthy body then your mind would be healthy too. Gymnastics is translated from the word “gymnazein” which means to exercise naked.
  • Men thought that gymnastics was too “strenuous” and that the women’s reproductive system would deteriorate
  • FIG or International Gymnastics Federation found a way to involve women’s gymnastics even with these unproven ideas.
  • 1928 is the first time women were allowed to compete in gymnastics in the Olympics.
    • They were allowed to choose what events they wanted to compete in
    • This left judges with difficulty calculating the winner for each exercise
  • The women’s events were all focused on soft passive movements and showing their flexibility with their beauty and grace.

Scoring Systems

  • The scoring has changed over time
  • Firstly the judges scored based on traditional female values meaning the movements done by the gymnast whether being soft or passive along with the beauty and grace of their routine whilst showing flexibility
  • Secondly was the 10.0 point system which is famously known for Nadia Comăneci getting a perfect score
  • Thirdly the modern scoring system is the E and D
    • E system stands for execution and the gymnast starts with 10 points and the judges deduct for every unpointed foot, out-of-bounds and more
    • D system stands for the difficulty which can be limitless but nobody has gotten over a 6.5 score
  • these two points are added together to create the final score roughly ranging from 12-15 points
  • No gymnast since Nadia has gotten a perfect score

Clothing: Leotards

  • In the past, some girls wore leotards that had a skirt sewn into them They were typically plain with no designs on them or anything special
  • The time Nadia Comăneci rose to fame, she and others wore leotards with long sleeves and even simple stripes on them. Along with an embellishment on the center of their chests
  • 80s period is when leotards started to become more diverse with designs as well as more form-fitting with a new material called lycra
  • The color white was popular amongst Americans because they wanted to show off their six-packs the white did exactly that
  • New millennium sparkles and crystals started to make an appearance, and have been around ever since some leotards having over 1,000

Equipment

  • The equipment in the 18th century were made of wood and leather
  • The leather aided the athletes in performing their artistic routines
  • Then in the 19th century, the materials became more durable such as metal rubber and plastic to help keep the athletes safe as well as let them push themselves to the limit
  • 1960 Dowell Johnson made history by creating gymnastic grips for the gymnasts when they were to perform on uneven bars
  • The grips helped keep the athlete's hands and wrists while performing their routine safely as well as enhance their grip on the bars, especially during flips and transitions to another bar
  • Today these grips have evolved so much from soft leather for the newer gymnasts to ultra-strong laminated leather for Olympians and professionals

2050?

  • Women are already limited to these certain events because they don't have the physiological advantages that the men have to perform their events.
  • Therefore can there really be any new events?
  • In the year 2050, with the way technology is evolving, it will be more advanced and with that, the scoring of events will be harsher
  • new technology can catch the gymnast's routine on video and play a replay while calculating how much air the girls get when jumping on a floor event, vault or her swings in the air for the uneven bars.
  • The motion picture can also capture how smooth and graceful certain flips or spins with studying the angle of the girls in the air, especially during the uneven bars where their flips and turns on the bars are crucial.
  • I do believe that women gymnasts will come up with new tricks that will raise the bar for difficulty level while pushing boundaries to where they can be similar to banned tricks.
  • I do believe that if height and weight do change by the time 2050 comes around it would be that gymnasts will be shorter and lighter rather than taller and heavier

  • Modern gymnastics started to become more popular in the early 1800s in Germany.
  • In 1896 men's gymnastics was able to be included in the first modern Olympic Games at the Athens Olympics.
  • The first World Championships were held in 1903.
    • The competitions would help standarize the different events and rules.
  • In todays world, men's gymnastics is now a major component for international competitions, such as the Olympics and World Championships.

Scoring Systems

  • The scoring has changed drastrically over time
  • Up until the mid-20th century there was never a scoring guide. Competitons were mainly to demonstrate all of the participants skills.
  • In the mid-20th century they came up with the 10 point system.
    • Gymnasts were scored on a scale from 0-10 with 10 being the highest score possible.
    • Judges would score based on the execution, difficulty, and artistry when gymnasts were performing their routines.
  • 1968 they came up with code of points.
    • Judges would add bonus points for the risks, originality, and virtuosity.

Clothing: Leotards

  • In Ancient Greece men gymnasts would perform with no clothes on.
    • The word "gymnast" comes from the greek word "gymnos" which means naked.
  • In the 19th century they would wear tight shorts and tanktops. Some would also wear singlets.
  • In the early 20th century during the first modern Olympic Games, they wore long pants and sleeveless shirts.
  • Now in the modern era, male gymnasts wear a variety things such as leotards, shorts, and long pants depending on the event.

Equipment

  • During Ancient times the male gymnasts would use wooden beams, ropes, and rings that were all made from natural resources.
  • In the 19th century equipment became more evolved. They would use things like the parallel bars, horizontal bar, and pommel horse.
  • In the mid to late 20th century they started to update their equipment for safety reasons. For example, the pommel horse was updated with a metal frame and foam padding covered in leather.
  • Now in the modern ere, there are different types of equipment fiberglass and carbon fiber because it adds strength and flexibility.

  • It is hard to say what men's gymanstics will look like in 2050, but the equipment will have advancements.
    • Equipment may be embeded with sensors that provide feedback to help judges make precise adjustments.
    • There may be things that will enhance safety features.
    • They may have eco-friendly materials for the equipment.
  • There will be virtuality reality training that will give all of the gymnasts a chance to get training whenever they need.
  • Artificial intelligence coaches will improve the gymnasts because they will be able to get detailed feedback.
  • There will be smart gyms, which means they are gyms that are updated on the latest technology to be able to monitor and enhance training sessions.
  • There will be advanced recovery zones with different technologies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy and sleep pods that will lead to faster recovery.
