Introduction: About Me

Hi, my name is Serena King, I am a sophomore psychology major and, criminology minor, from New Rochelle, New York, currently attending Howard University. I am working towards my bachelor of science in psychology to gain my master's and PhD in either criminal psychology or clinical neuropsychology. The human mind and behavior have always fascinated me. In high school, especially over quarantine, I was curious about why people think, feel, and act the way they do. This curiosity grew into a passion for understanding human emotions, relationships, and mental health complexities. The intersection of the brain, behavior, and the law fascinates me. I am intrigued by how neurobiological factors influence human behavior and decision-making, especially in the context of mental health and criminal behavior. My passion for understanding the complexities of the mind and its impact on individual actions has led me to want to pursue a career in clinical neuropsychology and criminal psychology. I aspire to be a psychologist because I see the potential to make a difference in individual lives and societal systems. Clinical neuropsychology allows for the exploration of how brain injuries, neurological disorders, or developmental conditions shape cognition and behavior. By identifying these links, I aim to provide patients with accurate assessments and tailored interventions to improve their quality of life. On the other hand, criminal psychology appeals to my desire to understand and address behaviors within the justice system. I am fascinated by the psychological factors that contribute to criminal activity and how rehabilitation and prevention strategies can be developed to reduce recidivism. Working in this field would allow me to bridge the gap between psychology and the legal system, ensuring that mental health considerations play a key role in justice processes.

Art Therapy And Body Image The topic that we are interested in for this research project is art therapy. Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses various forms of art to help advance people’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Art therapy is important because it offers a method of treatment that engages multiple parts of the brain and body. This therapy method can also be applied to treat many different neurological and emotional issues and boost confidence and self-esteem. Research tells us that the next steps for art therapy look generally positive. The benefits of art therapy are growing and are starting to be more recognized and it is looking to be a more used form of treatment. With that what we want to look at is how exactly art therapy affects body image. Our research question is: ”How does art therapy contribute to improving body image?” Our hypothesis is: ”Engaging in art therapy interventions that explore emotions through artistic mediums and involve creative expression, will play a part in improving body image among individuals.”

My short-term goals focus on building a strong academic foundation and gaining practical exposure to the field. I aim to deepen my understanding of core psychological concepts by excelling in courses such as developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and research methods. By maintaining a high GPA, I hope to position myself for future internships and competitive academic opportunities. Additionally, I plan to develop essential skills in statistical analysis and experimental design, as these are critical for success in both undergraduate research and graduate studies. I also plan to either graduate a semester early or graduate on time. After graduating from undergrad I plan on going to a graduate school where I am accepted into a dual degree program for my Masters & PhD Beyond academics, I am eager to gain hands-on experience by joining a research lab and participating in more psychology-related internships. This will allow me to apply classroom knowledge to real-world settings and explore areas like clinical neuropsychology or criminal psychology more in-depth. I also plan to actively engage in psychology club activities, network with peers and faculty, and explore volunteer opportunities in mental health organizations to further enhance my understanding of the profession and its impact on diverse populations.

My long-term goals revolve around making meaningful contributions to the field of psychology while building a fulfilling career. I aspire to earn advanced degrees in psychology (my master's and PhD), with a focus on clinical neuropsychology and criminal psychology, to deepen my expertise in understanding the complex relationships between brain function, behavior, and mental health. My ultimate goal is to work in roles that blend research and applied practice, such as assessing and treating individuals with neurological conditions or providing psychological insights within the criminal justice system. I also hope to later start my own private practice. Beyond personal career advancement, I am passionate about contributing to the broader psychology community and society. I aim to advocate for mental health awareness and reforms in the legal system to ensure equitable treatment for individuals with psychological conditions. By combining clinical practice, research, and advocacy, I strive to make a lasting impact that improves lives and advances the field of psychology.

Why Howard?

1.

Top ChoiceHoward has been my number 1 choice since high school. After applying early action and being deferred I was heartbroken. I did everything I could including writing a letter of continued interest to get in. When I got my acceptance letter I was beyond thrilled. The reason why Howrad has been my top choice is because of the experience, networking and so much more. Howard has so much weight, when you tell anyone you attended Howard it is such an accomplishment, and people think highly of you.

2.

Solidify what I want to do Howard allows me to explore my major. Even though I know I want to do psychology I can still be well-rounded and explore within my major. For example, I can take clinical psychology, neuropsychology, abnormal psychology, etc. I can make sure I know what I want to do.

3.

Makes me put myself out there Howard is all about networking and being able to put yourself out in the world. As someone introverted, it has been difficult having to put myself out there to gain experience. However, Howard makes you speak up and go after what you want. I have been able to join organizations, and clubs, and meet so many people because of what Howard has taught me.

4.

Community Going to a predominantly white middle and high school, I chose to go to an HBCU to be around more of my people. Howard's community is a vibrant, supportive, and empowering community that celebrates diversity, culture, and excellence.

People

This is Dr. Liane Nelson. Not only is she a family friend but I worked under her trauma center as an intern. She is the Chief Psychologist and Director of the WJCS Trager-Lemp Center for Treating Trauma and Promoting Resilience. She also worked as a psychologist for high-profile criminals. I am so grateful to her because she allowed me to see a new side of psychology while also giving me experience.

This is Rheka Liveris. She was my neuroscience teacher in 12th grade. She was the first person to ever introduce me to neuroscience. Seeing the overlap of psychology and neuroscience, her class made me research if I could go into a career with a combination of both subjects. She has also pushed me to be better and think more critically.

This is Donald Hebb, he is often called the father of neuropsychology. He is very influential to me because he created a career that I am highly interested in. He also coined the phrase Cells that fire together wire together. This phrase is commonly used in most of my psychology classes.

So this may be a bit funny yet the entire cast of Criminal Minds has been influential to me. The show showed me how psychology can be implemented in other careers. It also made me interested in researching how I can incorporate criminology with psychology and that is why I may be interested in pursuing criminal psychology.
