Description of the problem

Living in cities has its pros and cons, most services and products are available there, abundant study and job opportunities. And on the other hand, cities are the principal reason for which our planet is deteriorating, the population concentration continues growing and this means bigger needs of mobility, consumption and trash wasted. In these areas where most of us live, a problem that we all suffer from are the Heat Islands caused by us as a population.

Objectives

1.

Raise Awareness and Promote Education

2.

Encourage the Expansion of Green Spaces

3.

Develop a Sustainable Transportation Initiative

4.

Enhance Accessibility with Free Bike Rentals

5.

Promote Collaborative Urban Planning

Scope of the proposal

Educational Awareness Campaign
Green Space Advocacy
Cycle Path Development
Free Bike Rental System
Urban Planning and Sustainability Advocacy

SDGs to be addressed including explanation:

1. SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Target: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. How the Proposal Aligns:

  • Mitigates the heat island effect by promoting urban greenery and sustainable urban planning.
  • Enhances the livability of Monterrey through green spaces, shaded areas, and reduced urban temperatures.
  • Encourages sustainable transportation options like cycling, reducing reliance on cars and contributing to a more sustainable urban ecosystem.

3. SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

Target: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. How the Proposal Aligns:

  • Addresses public health risks caused by urban heat islands, such as heat-related illnesses and respiratory problems.
  • Promotes physical activity and healthier lifestyles through cycling.
  • Improves mental well-being by increasing access to green spaces and fostering a connection with nature.

2. SDG 13: Climate Action

Target: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. How the Proposal Aligns:

  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions by advocating for non-motorized transport (cycling).
  • Expands green spaces, which act as carbon sinks and lower urban temperatures.
  • Raises awareness about the role of individuals and communities in combating climate change through mitigation strategies and behavior change.

The bicycle routes in Distritotec towards the center of Monterrey go from Covarrubias, Fernando García Roel, Eugenio Garza Sada and Pedro Martínez avenues. There are existing bike lanes only on the avenues, it is a discontinued project and something that could be developed much more, another thing is that we are focusing on bicycles being used inside and outside the campus.

Information - analysis

Description of our final product

The creation of a flyer in which the students and residents of distrito tec know the value of green spaces, this with the intention that it generates in them a feeling of care and conscience, the second part is the creation of a complete initiative of construction of a cycle path map from the campus to the near leaving zones, like “Parque Tecnológico”, “La Roma”, “Torres Tec”, nuevo sur, in this cycle path there will be free bikes for tec de monterrey student.

Conclusion

The proposed project addresses Monterrey’s urban heat islands by focusing on the Distrito Tec area through education, environmental advocacy, sustainable transportation, and urban planning. By raising awareness with a flyer, it educates the community on the causes and effects of heat islands while promoting green spaces to inspire action. Practical solutions like a cycle path network and free bike rentals aim to reduce emissions, enhance mobility, and improve public health. The initiative also advocates for expanding green spaces, using reflective materials, and evidence-based urban planning to create a resilient and sustainable urban environment. Aligned with SDGs 3, 11, and 13, this project highlights how localized actions can contribute to global sustainability and transform Monterrey into a livable, eco-friendly city.

  • THE 17 GOALS | Sustainable Development. (n.d.). https://sdgs.un.org/goals#
  • Promote the expansion, preservation, and enhancement of green spaces within Distrito Tec.
  • Raise awareness of how vegetation mitigates the heat island effect by reducing surface temperatures and improving air quality.
  • Explore partnerships with local government and environmental organizations to implement green roofs and urban parks.
  • Geographic Scope: Design a network of cycle paths connecting the Tec de Monterrey campus to nearby neighborhoods, including:
  • Parque Tecnológico
  • La Roma
  • Torres Tec
  • Nuevo Sur
Specifications:
  • Paths will prioritize safety, accessibility, and connectivity.
  • Include shaded routes and resting areas to encourage usage even during hot weather.

Create a flyer to inform students and residents about the concept of heat islands, their causes, and their harmful effects on the environment, health, and quality of life. Highlight the importance of green spaces and sustainable practices to foster a sense of responsibility and inspire action.

Raise Awareness and Promote Education

https://chng.it/6zxXMczpLw

Design a comprehensive cycle path network connecting key residential areas such as “Parque Tecnológico,” “La Roma,” “Torres Tec,” and “Nuevo Sur” to the campus. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on motorized transport, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainable mobility.

Develop a Sustainable Transportation Initiative

  • Provide free bikes for Tec de Monterrey students to use along the proposed cycle path network.
  • Develop user-friendly bike-sharing stations at key locations, ensuring easy access and return.
  • Foster partnerships with local sponsors to fund and maintain the program.

Advocate for the development and maintenance of urban greenery, such as parks, tree plantations, and green roofs, within and around Distrito Tec. Emphasize their role in mitigating the heat island effect and improving air quality and overall urban resilience.

Encourage the Expansion of Green Spaces

Collaborate with local authorities to incorporate heat-mitigating strategies in urban planning policies, including:

  • Use of reflective materials in construction.
  • Mandatory inclusion of green spaces in new developments.
  • Provide data and insights on heat islands to support evidence-based policy decisions.

Implement a free bike rental system for Tec de Monterrey students along the proposed cycle paths. This system aims to encourage cycling as a primary mode of transportation, reducing urban heat contributions from vehicles and fostering a healthier lifestyle.

Enhance Accessibility with Free Bike Rentals

Partner with local authorities, urban planners, and community organizations to integrate reflective materials in construction, prioritize vegetation in new developments, and establish long-term strategies to combat heat islands. Ensure policies align with broader goals of environmental sustainability and public health improvement.

Promote Collaborative Urban Planning

  • Target Audience: Students, residents, and visitors in the Distrito Tec area.
  • Activities:
  • Design and distribute an informative flyer explaining the concept of heat islands, their causes, effects, and solutions.
  • Highlight the importance of green spaces in urban areas and their role in mitigating heat islands.
  • Encourage individual actions such as planting trees, reducing waste, and using alternative transport.
