Thanks
- Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States on the last thursday of November.
- The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621
- President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday on October 3, 1863.
Basic Facts
- The whole family gathers to eat a meal and spend time with one another. (Parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, grandparents, cousins, in-laws)
- Many families use Thanksgiving to express gratitude, enjoy time together, and watch sports or the Macy's Day Parade.
Common Activities
- The pilgrims sailed from England to "The Americas" on a ship named the Mayflower in 1620
- They settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts
- The Pilgrims were not the first people in this area, Native American tribes had lived in the Americas for over 10,000 years.
- One tribe, the Wampanoag, greeted the Pilgrims that were moving into their land
The Story of Thanksgiving
- Although the Native Americans and Pilgrims were not friends, the Native Americans still tought the Pilgrims useful farming practices.
- Using what they learned from the Native Americans, the Pilgrims had bountiful harvest season. To celebrate this, they had a three day feast.

- The holiday is celebrated all throughout the United States. An estimated 88% of Americans take part in the tradition.
- Its common for everyone to bring a home cooked dish but sometimes family spend the whole day cooking and eating together.
- In my family, we would eat around 4pm.
