The History of Pixar

Pixar began in 1974 when Alexander Schure created the computer Graphics Lab and recruited many computer scientists. Years later George Lucas approached the group and offered them a job at his studio; six employees moved to Lucasfilm. During the following months, they gradually resigned from CGL, found temporary jobs for about a year to avoid making Schure suspicious, and joined the Graphics Group at Lucasfilm. Among them was Ed Catmull who would later become the leader of the team, and bring Toy Story to life. In the early years they developed a lot of critical tools and technology that contributed to making CGI what it is today. At Lucas films the team worked on creating an animation rendering software known as reyes (for "renders everything you ever saw"), this became the basis for the program produced by pixar RenderMan that was released commercially in 1989 and it is still used today.

In 1986 pixar became an independent company when it was purchased by apple incorporated, and after several years of financial losses in 1991 pixar made a 26 million dollar deal with Disney to produce 3 computer animated feature films and one of those was toy story.

The History of Pixar

Pixar stands out for their original story lines that have meaning and are visually enchanting, their plots are often considered unexpected with their fictional context being implemented into modern society settings.

In 1995 Toy story was released. It was the first full length computer animated film and it was the highest grossing film of the year. In 1996 it was nominated for various academy awards and it was the first time an animated film was ever recognised for screenwriting. During the 1990 and the 2000 pixar developed the pixar brain trust, the studios primary developing process in which the directors writers and lead storyboard artist look at each other's projects regularly and give each other feedback. Pixar was purchased by Disney in 2006, since 1995 Pixar has released 21 featured films and 20 Pixar shorts. Innovative storytelling has always been the core of pixar's foundation and now shorts allow the freedom to experiment and develop new ways to tell stories and to use new technologies.

Inside out, because it has a clear message about the equal importance of the emotions we experience, it was a genius way to say that embracing sadness allows you to connect to all your oher emotion like anger and fear and the moral to the story is that when you identify with all your emotions you are more likely to create stronger connections to other people and in return a stronger connections to joy and happiness.

"Each of the emotions that star in Inside Out are inspired in a specific way: Joy is based on a star, Anger is a brick covered in fire, Sadness is a tear, Fear is a nerve and Disgust is a broccoli."

Rules to create your own story

  • Why must you tell THIS story?
  • What’s the belief burning within you that your story feeds off of?
  • That’s the heart of it. What is your character good at, comfortable with?
  • Throw the polar opposite at them. Challenge them. How do they deal?
  • You gotta identify with your situation/characters, can’t just write ‘cool’. What would make YOU act that way?
  • Pull apart the stories you like. What you like in them is a part of you; you’ve got to recognize it before you can use it.
  • Exercise: take the building blocks of a movie you dislike.
  • How d’you rearrange them into what you DO like?
  • Putting it on paper lets you start fixing it. If it stays in your head, a perfect idea, you’ll never share it with anyone.

Curiosities

Toy Story was the first animated film in Oscar history to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted or Original Screenplay, but lost to The Usual Suspects.

The film appeared in Luxo Jr. (1986), in the first short film made by Pixar, and has subsequently appeared in almost all of the company's productions. In addition, the small flexo became the company logo.

The code A113 that appears in all his films is also a reference to the classroom where he learned animation.
