Information about this study
What is a hypothesis ?
According to Cresswell and Cresswell (2023), " Hypothesis is a prediction about a specific event or relationship between variables."
- Experimental design used.
- Experimental research was used.
- According to Cresswell and Cresswell (2023), " Experimental research seeks to determine if a specific treatment is given to one group and withhold it from another group and determine how both groups score on an outcome."
1.
Experimental design and research
I think for this study, it is an experimental research design. The study uses a hypothesis to see what the results would be. I think the hypothesis is " If there were online book clubs then students would be more responsive to online than in face-to-face interactions.
Hypothesis found in online book club study.
. According to Cresswell and Cresswell (2023), "Given adolescents’ predisposition to technology, online book clubs may be a motivating factor for preteens and teens to sustain and encourage their voluntary reading of books and other print and multimedia as they move through adolescence" (p.177).
How to test for a good hypothesis.
Hypothesis testing found in the study.
According to Sharber, Whorl, and Melrose (2009), "The 20 middle and high school adolescents who participated in these Read and Talk Clubs were overwhelming voluntary, avid readers. The adolescents in these clubs were not immune to the peer-pressures of adolescents or to the craving for socialization that adolescence brings" (p. 178). I think that this quote is significant because it emphasizes or suggests that there is an experimental design happening with this study.
According to Cresswell and Cresswell (2023), There are experimental procedures and type of experiment that makes the study. For instance, there is one type for this study. "Single-subject design or N of 1 design involves observing the behavior of a single individual (or small number of individuals) over time" p. 177.
As part of a larger study on public-library based online book clubs (Scharber, 2009), 14 of the 17 girls in this club participated in research activities. For purposes of this manuscript, survey and interview highlights will be shared. All girls completed pre – and post-club online surveys; ten girls participated in interviews; and five parents/ guardians also participated in interviews
Scharber, Melrose, and Whorl (2009).
Was the hypothesis tested properly?
For me, I think that this study was through and exhaustive, but I do not agree with how they went about testing the hypothesis. I think it should have been done on a narrower scale then put into the HCL circulation for the public population. AAs mentioned in the quote above I think that this test was too broad then narrowed when I think it should have been the opposite to protect the participants.
