BRAZILIAN STREET ART
FREESTYLE BATTLE
BOOMBAP - PUMAPJL
GRAFITTI
Graffiti in Brazil began in the 1970s in the city of São Paulo. At that time, the country was going through a delicate moment, with censorship under the military dictatorship dominating the scene. Thus, as a cry for freedom, graffiti in Brazil emerged as a form of expression, protest, and criticism.
In the 1990s, graffiti became consolidated as part of Brazilian urban culture, especially in major cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte. Street art merged with other art forms, such as music (especially rap and hip-hop), creating a complete cultural movement.
Boom bap in Brazil is a movement that reclaims the roots of rap, which has always been a means of resistance and protest. Many artists from the underground scene, like PumaPjl, connect with this tradition, maintaining the raw essence of the style. Brazilian boom bap is not only about the sound but also about the message it conveys: a critique of the system, inequality, and life in the outskirts of big cities.
Puma is an artist who connects with the essence of traditional hip-hop. He makes a point of reclaiming the classic sound of 90s rap, without losing relevance in relation to current themes. Boom bap, as one of the earliest sounds of rap, carries a symbolism of authenticity, resistance, and protest—something that Puma also addresses in his music.

A rap battle is an improvised competition where two or more MCs face off by creating verses on the spot, with the goal of impressing the audience and judges through lyrical skill, creativity, and the ability to 'respond' to the opponent's attacks. In Brazil, rap battles are a central element of hip-hop culture, especially in cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte, where the movement has a strong presence in the streets.
Rap battles in Brazil are not just a display of skills; they also serve as a platform for young people from the outskirts to express their frustrations, hopes, and realities. For many MCs, rap battles are a way to stand out, break free from invisibility, and gain respect, whether within the hip-hop community or the broader music scene.
