Opinion

Epogue

I would say that the body of the book sometimes feels a bit tiresome, as the story always revolves around the same thing, but the ending it's really rewarding.. as much as shattering.

Devastated.

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes. I think what's more devastating about the ending of this book is that, even though you had been expecting that kind of ending through the entire book, it really hits so much harder than expected when you finally get to read it.

A bunch of memories of Julie and Sam crossing Julie's mind. The first one, about Julie noticing how his english classmate was going so often to her workplace. Then, the day they talked at the café where Sam worked; the day when they danced together at the school dance in the school parking lot; the day he picks her up with the car when he finds her running away from her house as she couldn't stand her parents shouting anymore. Then, the next scene begins with Julie starting a conversation with Sam at golden hour near a lake, where it says they used to meet hundred of times, and she seems to be reproaching him for leaving her. The prologue ends with him dissapearing, dissolving into cherry blossom petals, making the reader understand that this was a fictional goodbye that her mind created as they weren't able to say goodbye to each other before he passed out.

To which he responds from wherever he is. There he begins to become dependent on those calls, totally leaving behind any eagerness to try to leave it behind. They keep calling, not really having an answer as to why that was being possible. But these calls wouldn't stay the same forever, because if someone else knew about them, the connection would fail. And as they had to let two characters know on two occasions, they deteriorated. Fortunately, Julie's life was taking shape even without him, although it was very hard for her to let him go. But, finally, they were able to have that last goodbye.

Summary

In this book happens the story of a girl, Julie, whose boyfriend dies in her senior year of high school. In the first chapters, Julie tries to forget him in an aggressive way, not attending his ceremonies and throwing away all his belongings. At some point, she finally processes everything that has happened to her and, in desperation, calls him on the phone to listen to him one more time, even though it was so irrational.

Characters

The characters that we can highlight from the book are Julie and Sam, the main couple of the book. Mika, Sam's cousin; Oliver, Sam's best friend; James, Sam's younger brother; Mr. Lee and Tristan, who worked at the bookstore where Julie works and her mom.
