Past simple and present perfect

What is the past simple?

We use the past simple to talk about things that happened and finished in the past.

-d for verbs that ended in e Arrive- arrived, change-changed, love-loved -ed for verbs that ended in consonant or in y Walk-walked, kiss-kissed, enjoy-enjoyed There are some irregular verbs, the most common are: Be-was/were, do-did, have-had

Uses We use the present perfect: -To talk about actions that happened in the past but are connected to now. Ej: I have lived in Murcia since 2010 - The time when the action is performed has not yet ended. Ej: They have gone to dance twice a week. -The action is repeated constantly at an indefinite time between the past and present. Ej: I have visited this museum several times The action was recently completed. For this use, "just" is used. Ej: I just have finished.

Activity to work both past simple and present perfect. "Tell me about your life"

First, the students are divided into two groups. Once divided, flashcards are distributed to each group with different example of incomplete sentences that they must complete using the past simple or the present perfect. When the first group finishes, the game stops, and everyone revieews the sentences together. The group that completes all the sentences corrrectly wins. Finally, the teacher will ask about the differences between these two tenses and why each tense was used in the sentences.

Structure

Affirmative: subject + verb (past form) + complement. She found a jacket in the room. Negative: subject+ did not+verb (infinitive) I didn't want to dance. Interrogative: did +subject + verb (infinitive) Did you find the treasure?
